Wow don`t see many about now. I remember in the mid eighties buying a 1977 Chrysler Alpine Hatchback - third one down on your pics (before they were Talbot over here). It was really cheap and spacious and compared to my previous Viva HB and Austin 1100 seemed really modern.
Sadly it turned out to be a tinny moneypit.
However now I think it would be really cool to see one on the road again. I can`t remember when I last saw one.
Go on, go for it. You know you want to....

i had an Alpine when they were just cheap bangers, i'd have a proper drive of one before you spend any money on it, they are not pleasant cars.

We had an Alpine in the very late 1980s. A split personality Chrysler/Talbot depending where you looked. T reg 1500cc as I remember, and a pretty good car for a 1970s motor when you consider the archaic and/or poorly spec'd/poorly built rubbish some of the other manufacturers were churning out in the 1970s.
It was fairly well built and not very rusty, it drove well and was even surprisingly quick. It did however have the worn gear linkage which meant gear changes were a point-and-guess affair.
We scrapped it in the end because the clutch started slipping and the sloping engine meant replacing it would have been a nightmare. I believe my dad still has its headlights, complete with wash/wipe, somewhere at home.
Would I have another if they were still common enough to be available? I think so. Would I consider it the coolest car ever? Probably not.

...worn gear linkage which meant gear changes were a point-and-guess affair. Very true. Even when new they weren't very confident feeling. I served my time at a Peugeot/Talbot bodyshop and remember them being a bit of a poor quality car. Then again, they weren't very expensive compared to the Ford dealership next door so they sold quite a few. I remember one of the guys buying a bright red Horizon brand new. Drove it straight out of the showroom, up the ramp to the bodyshop on the next floor and painting the bottom half silver. It looked quite nice for it's time and I seem to remember people coming into the showroom asking if there was a special edition available as they seen this two-tone Horizon around.

Here's my old Alpine. ![](http://www.hotkey.net.au/~russandneola/mychrys.jpg) I believe it was one of only two in Australia - at least I was told there was another getting around though I've never seen it. I mostly enjoyed the time I had with it. I found it nice to drive and thought it was pretty decent compared to equivalent cars of its era. The big problem with it though was the previous owner wasn't mechanically minded. He would take it to any old mechanic who, rather than trying to source the correct parts, would bodge the repairs. Nearly every problem I had with it resulted from one of those bodges. In the end I realised waiting a week for parts to arrive from RJ Grimes every time it broke down was madness, so it was replaced by my 505.
