Well sorry to use the "scene" term but it came to me today, there i am driving my mothers MK4 golf along, it's a 1.4 match so basically pov spec, however it's got cd electric mirrors and windows, air con, alloys the lot really. Oh wait you do have to wind the rear widows with a thing we call an arm. Just made me think you look at some of the povo spec 1.3 MK2 golfs etc being done so well at the moment, the less is more aproach.
So whats going to be different in 20 years time when there are no real differences in the specs on the old motors of the future?

there will be two specs available in 2030 - ones with working electronics and ones without, which will probably be the ones in the scrapyard.
you can bet your ass new cars will drop like flys as they get older because of all the OEM only electronics in them.

Even (soon to be-) my Bluebird LX from 1990 has 4xleccy windows, central locking and porbably other stuff I don't need. I was hoping for something a bit grim but it's "loaded"

What makes the retro thing interesting and fascinating is, you can nowadays drive an old high-spec car with all the toys and luxury and it still feels deluxe compared to new cars which have all the electric gimmicks even in pov spec. Anything with GXL, Ghia, CD etc. feels really high-spec in comparison to 'highline' or other contemporary high-spec of today. Take an Audi 90 quattro 20V for an example, in its days around 1990 with all options like climatronic, 4 elec. windows, leather, heated sets, sunroof... options alone cost half the price of the entire car. Options always made cars expensive, our advantage today by driving retros.

My Jag is a povo spec entry level XJ40 although i think the power seats and walnut trim were options, gotta wonder why people buy new cars.

Well, my uncle actually has a Valiant AP5, like the one below, which was originally Mormon-spec. I'd say their church has a fair bit of cash, so it's not povo-pack, but they always order their cars without radios, because electronic entertainment is obviously too close to satan! ;D

No brake servo and 4 gears ftw! The Polo is the first car i've ever driven on the road without a brake servo and frick me it made me open my eyes lmao! Although I quickly got used to it. It's quite funny coming from my E36 325 BMW into the Polo the difference is like black n white but regardless I still bloody love this little Polo hehe, quirky indeed!

One of my first cars was a povo spec mk2 fiesta (formerly owned by a vicar ;D) was a 950 with no heated rear screen, rear wash wipe, passengers mirror, hubcaps, stereo or even headrests XD. Shame it was rotten, guess the interior would be sought after now too (red and gray striped iirc), lot of bits went to save my marginaly better spec'ed 1100 (still didn't have a glovebox, always found that weird that 1400 sports and XR2's had a different dashboard) I seem to remember some early base model mk3 fiestas not having passengers door mirrors either, and my mums k reg one didn't have a glovebox door or clock lol, was fuel injected tho (and a right pain in the for not starting in the morning) Also remember late 80's bmw 5 and 7 series not even coming with a cassette player, just a radio, remember my grandad buying a new one (think it was a 735) and complaining that it came with nothing as standard, cloth seats etc.

There was an Italy only Panda with the 2 cylinder engine from the 126, canvas seats, no heater, no interior trim. IIRC it cost pennies over there.

OTSO povo spec, has anyone ever seen a Herald S?
Herald 948 with none of the meagre selection of toys, no carpets, minimal brightwork. A vanishingly small number have survived, if you ever find one in a barn then I'm sure you'd have Herald cognoscenti biting your hand off.

I like povo spec for the relability. Mechanical windows/mirrors /seats are far more likely to last.

Drums front and back, no servo, no radio, vacuum wipers, no toys whatsoever, but I'm happier that way. ;D And who needs a heated windscreen when you've got opening quarterlight windows?
In all seriousness though, as proven, less toys generally means less problems.

Most cars will keep going though even as the toys all gradually break down, i've had plenty of cars with manual windows that just make a clicking noise when you turn the handle or manual door locks that don't work, i like me luxo barges and would rather have a povo spec one than something with no toys at all.
