if you meet certain criteria you can get money from the taxman for driving to work if you are working don't get travel expences are working at a place that is not your employers premises examples i know of are builders, sub contractors, cleaners and shop security guards the way it works is you can claim against tax credits your travel costs i was able to claim this while i was woking as a aircraft subby obviosly if you feel you may qualify you will have to ring the tax credits people but be prepared for a struggle as the last person i helped with this had to wait a week for the only person there who knew about this allowance to come back from holiday
so who knows you could end up with a big chunk of your travel costs paid back (up to 70%) ttfn glenn how long before this decends into the kitty litter? fyi the 09 tax paperwork consists of 11500 pages yep eleven and a half thousand

being as lots of Tory voters will be doing very nicely from the mileage allowance then its here to stay If you have a tax accountant then he should have pointed out if you are eligible for this tax rebate. If you don't do your own tax then you are unlikely to be the sort of person who qualifies. If you work from home you can offset some of your mortgage against tax too. Theres lots of tax claims you can make, but most of us are "just" PAYE I guess....

this is for paye people, it is all a bit complicated (isnt everything tax related?) will try and explain it a bit when you are working (depending on amount of hours you work) you are eligable for working tax credits and if you have children you qualify for child tax credits as well as you earn more the amount of credits is reduced this can put you in the situation where for every pound you earn you only end up 10pence better off (yes a lot of working people are in effect taxed at 90%) but if you qualify to claim back your travelling expenses you knock the amount it costs you from your total income and they top up your credits by up to 70 pence(ish) per pound claimed remember the cost of travelling is not just the cost of fuel, i once saw some figures for a big merc and covering 10,000 miles a year it worked out at £5 per mile!!!! ttfn glenn

If you work from home you can offset some of your mortgage against tax too. Indeed, I claim all business mileage at 40p per mile and 10% of my mortgage, electricity, gas, council tax etc... as I'm a sole trader working from home using one room as an office.
