Just found these photos whilst looking through Flickr, No really and details about them from what the chaps put up. www.flickr.com/photos/25349554@N03/ < you have to copy and paste link due to it not working. Take a seriously hammered series II 88" Land Rover pick up... Build a custom frame to lower it 14 inches and give it a: -356 Porsche super 90 engine -narrowed swing axle trans -narrowed type III rear end -narrowed type I front end Edited for my dumb spelling!

How cool is that? Although, Bryn's probably makes more evolutionary sense.
Just your title's full of win!

yep, very cool. Odd running gear choice though but being a VW and aircooled fan i can see the appeal I probably would have fitted a built type 1 motor though.

Dammit, everytime someone else lowers a LR my RR plan gets more normal. Landies are an often ignored choice for these soirt of mods, despite most other 4x4's getting all sorts of treatment. Anyone tip me off as to the whereabouts of a cheap Scimitar GTE chassis?

I probably would have fitted a built type 1 motor though. Is the 356 not a type 1 motor anyway?

I probably would have fitted a built type 1 motor though. Is the 356 not a type 1 motor anyway? No. It's design is based around the type 1 VW, but the changes Porsche made to give it more power make the Porsches their own unique engine, and it's not similar enough for many of the parts to interchange. This makes it rare and expensive!! Also, depending on the particular model of early Porsche, they had all sorts of wild go-faster stuff on them like dry sumps and overhead cams.

Doesn't work quite as well as Bryn's Win Wagon, but how cool would it be to see the two of 'em together?

The 356 engine in its later form (after about 53) is a totaly different engine to a VW. The Porsche case is 3 peice, the 3rd part being the front timing cover and about the only interchangable part is the distributer, but a VW part uses a Vacum advance unit, the Porsche one doesn't, so even though it will fit , it won't be any good!!It is difficult to get a lot of power from a 356 or 912 engine because the cam is too close to the crank, making stroking impossible, for larger capacity you have to rely on oversized pistons, most racers build 1600cc screamers, with about 160bhp acheivable. The dry sump engines are the 4 Cam Carrera units, and use gear driven overhead cams, very complicated to re-build, usually at a cost of 60k and up!! the 4 cams were fitted to Spyders, Abarth Carrera's, single seaters and 356 Carrera's, as well as a few specials in 1500 and 1600cc's but were continually developed until they became the Carrera 2 litre engine that was fitted to 356 Carrera 2's and the 904 and some other specials... But, the old Landie probably would be better off with a big type 1 VW motor, they are cheaper and you can get a lot more power out of them!!!
