So at work we are currently building a new truck to replace the somewhat delapidated Series50 wrecker, it started life as a meat pie truck with a refrigerated box on the back like this: Once the garage bought it, the box was lopped off and the cab extended alongside the recovery conversion. Its been a long time since the cab stretch, and the cab is rotten as a pear, worse at the back, but pretty bad upfront. This is the truck in it's current form: So RR'ers inspire me, do I get the stinkypink and go hunting for a new cab?

yes, do it, i've always though these were awesome looking (in a big ugly bruiser kind of way) trucks. Have a bit of a thing for recovery trucks/wreckers myself. Got to drive one about 20 miles on the road years ago when I was around 15 and it was a scary experience, biggest things i'd driven at that stage were tractors, a transit dropside and landrovers. Would love to have a go in one again even though it's been years. These have a big perkins diesel don't they? Heres a few more pictures, bit of dodge 50 love

What's the history on these? Whose is their DNA? How much Renault, Dodge and even Rootes is there in their design? Alistair?

I've gotta say it, I much prefer the round headlamp front end, I suppose it'll hinge on if I can find a decent cab and somewhere to put it all!

I remember them being launched in the UK in 1979, as far as I remember some of the external panels were similar to the American-built Dodge B100/B200. Engines were built by Perkins, namely their rugged 4.236 3.9-litre 79bhp/182lb/ft four-pot. The 4-litre Phaser was used in the Series 2 models and boasted a mighty 85bhp and just over 200lb/ft of torque.
Initially they were badged as Karriers over here, then with the 1980 acquisition of the Chrysler group by Peugeot, they were rebadged as Dodges under the Talbot name. PSA sold the 50-series to Renault in 1981, so from then until 1987 they were badged as Dodge under the Renault name, and then with the introduction of the Series2 in 1987 they were badged solely as Renaults until production (always at the old Commer/Karrier plant in Dunstable) ceased in 1993.
Rugged and reliable (the utilities companies bought them in their thousands), cab rot was the biggest enemy IIRC. My mate's garage had an '85 S1 wrecker for years...I drove it a few times, it was a heavy old thing but would pull a house down. ;D

The doors and windscreen (if not more) are a direct swap from the amercian B series vans (B150, B250 etc) which is handy for things like glass

That would be bloody handy to rebuild the pink pantzer, but not at that money. I'm hoping to find a knackered military one like skinnylew suggested and rob the cab from that.
