Stevie wonder, MOT tester. What to do?

I accept I souldn't have taken the sellers word for it and bought the car without a thorough inspection by myself.

I Am not after any compensation from the seller (as if he would own up and refund me anyway!)

As regards "loosening" things after I picked up the car, why would I do that?? that line of thinking doesn't make sense to me, please explain.

They check the numberplates for condition, I would be suprised if they didn't read the number while they were at it.


Ps, the car passed with no advisories.

I am considering seeking legal advise regarding some recompense from the garage tat carried out the test in order to help me make repairs to pass the test (again)

Sorry to say I agree with this, I am motor trade and know pretty much what will and what won't get through a ticket, the only thing that's actually legally dodgy is the no advisories, even the number plate is probably just a lazy mistake, cant remeber a tester ever checking the plates were the same, I must have taken at least a 1000 cars for MOT's over the years (3 this week) and an MOT is no guarantee whatsoever that the car is a good 'un just that at the time of testing it meets the minimum standards as laid out by VOSA, nothing more nothing less..

If you didn't check the car over properly then it's entirely your fault, I crawl over every inch of a car when I buy it unless it's so cheap it doesn't matter, as I don't want to ever be in your position..

The chances are the lamps probably worked when it was MOT'd it was almost certainly wearing a different set of tyres, if the brakes pass the roller test and aren't binding excessively or leaking at all then it'll pass, end of matter, the hole in the footwell is probably outside the prescribed area as the SJ has a seperate chassis, stuff like the fuel lines and the reversing light is completely irrelevant it's not even tested.

I'm not trying to be harsh and I do feel for you position but if you got all excited and bought a lemon because you didn't inspect it properly, you only have yourself to blame, would you trust the seller with anything else important? not likely, so why would you take his word that 'it's a good un' I mean come on next you'll say he told you it had one owner and it was the local vicar...

If you by a car privately you are basically taking on a risk that the car may not be 100% as described if you are unwilling or unable to inspect the car to your satisfaction or not happy to shell out for a professional's opinion then you must take the risk yourself or you should buy from a dealer where you have legal recourse if it all goes pear shaped, other wise it's buyer beware.

And if you reckon that's a grand's worth of work to make that safe, bring it round mine and i'll only charge you £750, cant say fairer than that..

The only consolation is that if the tester works at a centre that's currently on a 'red' notice from VOSA, that testing station could be closed down.

just they could have been loosened after the mot, if the seller had changed something on the front end before you bought it

have you checked the MOT cert online - to make sure there was no adversaries?
do you have a successfull emissions cert. with the MOT cert?

Well, if the crack on the windscreen goes across your line of sight, that's a fail right there isn't it?

Jokes aside, I think you did the right thing reporting the testing station for what it's worth. I'd be pretty pi$$ed with them myself but the bigger issue for me is the whole "how many other dangerous cars has this place let out on the road, be it as a favour to a mate or just through negligence".

I'm sure a lesson has been learned about inspecting before you buy so you don't need to hear that one again.

Have you thought of using www.turd-in-the-post-to-a-curse word.com as a way of letting the seller know that you are somewhat disgruntled?

VOSA will hopefully take the appropriate action. In my opinion if a tester makes a genuine human error and misses something during a test it's bad, but understandable [we all make mistakes]. Carrying out a fraudulent test should result in an instant banning of MOT testing.

Me and this car are not getting on,

I drove it to work today (only 2 miles down a lane)

On the way back I had to brake in the wet to avoid some bint in a corsa coming the other way, I aimed the jeep away from the corsa and stamped on the brakes, the wheels locked up and I drifted up the verge and twatted it into a telegraph pole.

The pole and jeep both survived with only a dent in the jeep bull bar.

This is not my week.

I am starting to think a gallon of petrol and a box of matches would be a good idea. lol
