I was thinking about getting one, I need a vehicle for work and a daily driver, (local journeys not usually more than 20 miles range max) I want something with a soft top or removable hard top and a fold down windscreen would be a bonus. If you don't know the story, there are two brothers in india who ended up manufacturing jeeps under licence. they make a CJ3 jeep (1950s type) and they were manufactured until about 1993. they are fitted with the old peugeot 2.3 diesel so slow but reliable. Later model... I was thinking get one, strip off all the unnessersary bits (after all that is the jeep ethos) and paint it olive drab like this one that just sold on ebay...

don't do it, my freind was looking at buying one a few years back, they are absolutely horrible to drive, far worse than a real jeep or even most of the kit versions, seriously, go drive one, even a brand new one feels like driving a 40's army truck.

I've heard the horrors, but apparently, while slow and thirsty they are reasonable as a proper offroader.
They have their fans, but then so does every kind of fetish and perversion you can imagine, and a lot you wouldn't want to.

Me mate had one for an all day test drive, we weren't allowed to go off road in it, but even with both of us driving it and free fuel we still only manged 150 miles in it, the salesman was trying to give us one each to drive even though i told him i didnt want to buy one.

are you a member of the poking badgers forum then? Check out Eagle and Jago kits, some were available to fit a Diahatsu Fourtrack chassis I beleive, now one of those might be alright.

hmmmm,
most Jagos are escort based, the Eagle ones look better but both are 2wd as far as I know.
I really don't mind the drivability, most of my miles are just around town and down rural lanes and If I need to go far I can take the van.
I was just wondering about reliablity and off roading capabitily as I used to mess about bit.

you can get jago's on fourtrak chassis, my ex boss used to own the one they built as a demonstrator.
Have a look at the price of proper CJ5's and 7's before you go spending your money on a Mahindra, the mate who looked at one of those ended up with three proper CJ Jeeps, £300, £650 and £2500 respectively, the expensive one had big wheels and tyres, a winch, chrome accesories, bucket seats etc etc.

A few of these Mitsubishi J54s have been imported to the UK, I bet they're a bit more appealing and reliable with their modern Mitsubishi diesels

Hmm, the jeeps are a bit pricy but worth considering for the right price.
Asia, had thought about them but I really like the no frills appearance of a de trimmed mahindra.
(goes off to hunt ebay)

My old boss had a Mahindra and loved it, especially off-road. There was a place in the shadows of Conway castle, North Wales who were apparantly about the only place left you could get spares for them but don't know if they're still going.
If you fancy getting something different though how about a Lada Niva? They're mint off road, something a bit different and made for the most extreme environments.
*Quick edit: if you want reliablility, ease of parts availability and excellent value for money don't ignore an 8V Frontera Sport.

get a suzuki SJ, i'm sure the screen could be modded to fold down, not so cool or original but probably better in real life.

am I daft for suggesting a series landrover soft top? get an ex mod spec one and it all folds down, door tops come off etc etc. Good enough offroad and plenty of aftermarket bits available for them

Bingo, Found it, Asia Rocsta!, What was these like, same kind of thing to the Mahindra I think, though better looking IMHO. They are based on suzuki SJ's are they not. Probably made using the old SJ production line bought and shipped out. A mate of mine had a Mahindra almost 20 years ago now. It was a horrendous thing. It was almost new when he bought it but it drove like a 40 year old tractor. Everything was as slack as a 65yo prossies minge who has had 25 kids. The whole drivetrain felt disjointed from the body. It bounced around and crashed over every little ripple in the road and the interior(if you can call it that)was so agricultural and basic that the original WW2 willys jeep probably had more creature comforts. It struggled to get up even the most modest hills and drank diesel at an alarming rate! This mate of mine thought it was the best thing on the planet and ended up spending loads of dosh on it, getting it sprayed up(it was only 2 years old but needed a paint job already!)and putting big fat alloys on it. I was just happy to be rolling around in my terracotta 3 door MK3 Escort 1.3

A few of these Mitsubishi J54s have been imported to the UK, I bet they're a bit more appealing and reliable with their modern Mitsubishi diesels ^^ What he said ^^ The Mitsubishi Jeep was made under licence based on the CJ3b. Because it has the licence, it is the only vehicle manufactered that is allowed to be badged 'Jeep' other than the orignal American models. (hence why Jago calls theirs Geep) Most have the 2.7 diesel 4DR5 engine which is amazingly reliable and pretty economical. Some models have the 2.2 'Hurricane' pertol engine but very, very few (mainly due to the 2.7d being so ideal for the vehicle) Park one next to a CJ3b and the only differences are the front wings (which drop down on the front with the Mitsy) and the Mitsubishi diamonds stamped into the front panel. Mechanically they are chalk & cheese with the Japanese model being far better built & more reliable than the US original (and with the added bonus of the uber strong 2.7 workhorse engine). So much so that the US Army actually started using the Mitsy Jeep themselves!! (Mitsy logos removed for obvious reasons) A lot of guys in North America, who totally worship the Jeep, favour the Misty version for the solid build and reliability. A lot of the guys out there specially import them from Japan because they know that they are getting a much better vehicle. While I was out in Canada, one of the guys I was staying with had one of these and says it's 'universally known' (in N America) as the best Jeep variant in the world...far superior to the home brand version! I spend a brilliant few days out & about in it - up in the mountains and exploring Squamish and have to say it's an awesome motor! So well put together. All the doors come off, the screen folds down etc....but you prob know that anyway Here are some shots of my Jeep encounter: My friend Neil and his lovely Mitsy Jeep I know there are a few around the UK and getting parts isn't difficult (genuine Mitsubishi dealer can get everything) It's certainly the only real Jeep I would consider if you're thinking of going down that route?
