Seing that Winchester cab on the other thread got me thinking about FX4s etc.
I know a couple of celebrities love them, and a 2.7 diesel auto Fairway might be kind of cool.
What are they like to drive as a normal car rather than a work vehicle? I know people can be happy with a van when if a car felt the same they would hate it.
I guess the body could be thrown away and a rod body built on it.

You would be best to sort out the handing on one though as this road test scan i done shows...

I keep seeing that F4STCAB on ebay. Even twittered it to Mr Stephen Fry who is a world renowned cab nut.
It scares me.
Yes, the higher speed handling would need some work.

We have one, it was my wife's daily until it came off the road due to serious rust issues (ie. no floor joining on to the rear wheelarches!) They're fun to drive and we got noticed here in Somerset as they've never been used a Taxis round here. They're not fast, although it'll comfortably do 65-70 it just takes a while to get there! If you've got a pre '92ish one it's drums all round so the brakes are fine round town but you need to leave plenty of room if you're doing dual carriageway or motorway speeds, I'd describe them as "adequate" but nothing like a more modern car. Later ones have struts up front and disc brakes so may be a bit better. Ours is an auto, brilliant for town driving. If you're tall the driving position is a bit cramped but it's not uncomfortable. You do tend to look through the very top of the windscreen though as it's very small. The wipers are rubbish, I think they were improved on the later ones. Just watch out for rust! Even if the paint job seems good it'll probably be hiding all manner of horrors as they get blown over every year to keep them looking smart. We have a spares one and the front wings were made of 1/8 inch of filler over wafer thin, frilly, rusty metal. See also sills. The outer sills bolt on and can be hiding a real mess, they're a rust trap too. Really good for parts hauling too. I got a full interior from a Granada Scorpio in the back of ours and still had room to sit in it! This is the only photo I've got of it on t'bucket at the moment but I'll see if I can find any more.

I test drove one (a manual Fairway) and it was pretty shonky to be honest, but in a likeable way. It was reading 9000 miles on its 6-digit ex-Austin Rover odometer, so I'm guessing it had done over a million miles! Still drove quite well though. One thing that would need altering if you're tall is the driver's seating position, it's terrible.

I still think I want one, and the wooden floor sounds weird. Did all FX4s and Fairways get them, or just the FX4?

It's only wooden in the back, the H reg fairway has it too. It's basically 2 square ply panels that fit in the metal framework of the rest of the floor. It makes getting at exhaust mountings and prop shaft easy. The front is metal (and rusts!) The drivers seat will go down, but you can't get it back very far. That said I'm 6'3" and I don't find it any more cramped than my MK1 Golf.

Funnily enough, my boss bought one of these earlier in the month. It's great. You know the turning circle is going to be good, but your first encounter with full lock in a car park is hilarious!
On a longish stretch of dual carriageway, I wound it up to 63mph - eventually. This one seems to be low mileage (only 59k!) and the ride is surprisingly good. It is a bit cramped but not uncomfortable. Not sure how far I'd like to travel in one, but I doubt it'd be crippling - some people used to spend most of their lives behind the wheel after all!
I want it...

Oh that looks special, and probably fairly doable with it being a seperate chassis.

I think that was Mk3cokebottle... he posted a load of pics of "just got this" cars with no followup, think he had an argument then left in a huff As to Fairways, I've had one! Everyone is right. hoot to drive, but slow. horrible rot with lash and paint 20 layers deep, over a million miles on the clock too. Watch out for... kingpin trouble, rebuild kits are not cheap. Leaky seals on steering box (power assisted - again not cheap) Turning circle is immense. only the chevette and triumph herald beat it (as far as I know) and for the size, nothing comes close. It's a total hoot! When mine "died" I welded a scaffold tower to the top and used it as a mobile platform to put the roof on the garage ;D Thats how manouverable they are! Driving position gives you cramp. or it did for me. seemed about the same as an LDV300 (same wheel and clocks too! - proper mishmash of BL and ford all over, with a nissan engine..) If you buy one, I have 5 or 6 part worn 175 R 16's kicking about....
