Just bought a few of these 'push fit' unions and pipe to replace the old oil cooler pipe work. I'm really struggling to get the unions into the pipe, got them as far as the 2nd barb but no more - another 10mm or so to go. Tried oil and grease to ease them on but no difference. Left the ends of the pipe in hot water for a while but that's not made it any easier. Anyone used these and got some handy hints for installing them? Thought about a spot of washing up liquid  |

I've used those type and found them really easy; I think I used a little washing up liquid on the hose. I wonder whether you have the wrong hose?

Hot water as in nearly boiling for the hose and oil on the fitting. Also clamp the fitting in the vice so you can really push.
They are awkward to get on but the hose will never slip off when in use.

Bit of grease on the spigot and inside the hose, hose into boiling water (I use my camping stove in the garage) until the bubbles stop coming out of the furry surface. Wear something like thick welding gloves* to immediately push the spigot and hose together. Don't stop pushing until it's fully in. If you stop halfway it can stick like that.
*welding gloves to allow pushing really hard without bruising your hands - not to save you from boiling water
