Hey all! think this is my first post on here so il introduce myself! I'm Fatlad, I'm 20 and I'm doing motorsport engineering at coventry university. I made the mistake of going to the 16v mini club meet last week with dazzler and the mini-ota. I say mistake as now ive seen how quick some of the cars are ive decided to sell up the 1430 a-series to fund a 16v build! its probably going to be 4age power but I'm not 100% yet was looking at the 1.8vvc k series or maybe a red top. but seen as how I helped dazzler out on the mini-ota I think it will probably go that way! id love a 20v but they don't seem to turn up very often. plan is to do the swap while I'm off uni over the summer and hopefully get in a track day with it early autumn. if my 1430 goes for good money il book and pay for a trackday in late august early sept to give me something to aim for! lol. think I'm going to do a frame based around the standard mini one and probably end up putting the rad in the boot. would like to keep it on my 10" wellers but I cant see it happening so will be looking for some 13x8 wellers if anyone knows where I can get them from? going to start by buying a complete aw11 mr2 or a corolla then go from there! found some more pictures of my build up to the stage its at now. I added cross braces, doorbars, dash bars to a safety devices 6 point cage and welded it all in. all done in 38mm cds. fish mouthing tubes is a curse word to do with an angle grinder + hack saw! 1430 engine fitted bit of smoothing spraying the inside orange on the inside! hence its nick name "Jaffa" door bars 6x10 wellers with fat dish built it up and ran it like this for ages because it needed to be done for srr07 then it got cake! then it got painted by dazzler after a week of being on curse word duty!

Looks good chap ;D I would stick with the 10's, the rolling radius is the same (if you stick with 175/50's) and it'll out the power down ok with the 10's. I would only up size if it it to get bigger brakes in What is the 1430 putting out at the mo? I'm nearing the end of converting mine from a 94 BHP 1275 to a 120(ish) BHP 2.0 8v Vaux and the 1st road test the other day confirmed it was def the right thing to do

and so it begins!!!! the a-series is all but sold and I have just bought this! got it here for a bargain! cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=250435232901looks like it is going to be an 'ota after all! its the small port engine so thats 134bhp straight out of the box ;D with a tubular manifold and some minor port work it should be good for 150bhp with a 5 speed box! woop! I have just fitted a 998 to get me going for the time being. quite looking forward to the possibility of more than the 15mpg I got out of the 1430! plan is to keep the mini running as long as possible by getting a bulkhead from the scrappy to build the frame around. got a spare subby courtesy of dazzler so all is looking well so far! looking forward to getting it all in my garage and getting the welder and grinder out! lol

the 1430 was putting about 120bhp down. with the wellers ive got on at the mo i can get the metro turbo 4pots behind them so no real issue there. the only reason for going up to 13s would be bigger contact patch and a better choice of rubber. also with lo pros on 13s the handling will a bit sharper.

yer i picked up on that it has got about a 15 previous owners on the log book so I'm guessing it has been re-shelled at some point!
anyway today i got a dashboard knocked together and mounted up the acewell. also finished putting the 998 in to get me back up north. going to fetch the corolla at the start of the week. cant wait!

so.... plans have changed somewhat! turns out the corrolla engine wasn't worth messing about with it had a knackered bottom end so the hunt began for a new donor! looked at mr2s and corrollas but then this came up for cheap and i couldnt resist! its a rover 200vi fitted with a 1.8 vvc engine so I'm going to sling that in the front! the mini is looking pretty sorry for itself at the moment so now seems a good enough time to take it off the road and get cracking proper. ;D on another note ive had no end of bother with a set of gaz lowered coilovers i bought recently, gone through two sets in the past month. keep sending them back and getting replacements. the damping circuit just keeps failing on them, spoke to the guy at gaz and he says its because I'm running it too low and the damper is smashing the valve when it bottoms out. i don't think the car is particularly low, seen far lower. when i suggested that they where just badly designed if it was possible for the valve to be hit by the piston then surely the bumpstops went correct? long story short the tops of the offset mounts have since snapped off and the coilovers are scrap. so moral is as far as I'm concerned..... GAZ OFFSET PIN COILOVERS FOR THE MINIS ARE TOSS, THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU BUY THEM! I'm gna save up and buy a full set of avos bought a clubman front end as well just to make it easier plus the fact clubbys look mean as imho! hopefully ill be able to start chopping and welding soon!

Awwrite fatlad!! Ahh so that's what's going on with the rover, sounds like an awesome idea, I don't know what dazzler was going on about ;D lol! So what's been in it everytime I saw it? the 998 temporary stand-in? (i ask because it sounds beastlie.) oh and WTF 15mpg on the 1430? There's gotta be something wrong there surely maybe the carb(s) need (s) playing with? Will you keep the standard ecu/loom etc on the rover engine, if you don't - then megasquirt ftw you'll get about 40mpg, it'll pay for itself in no time with the miles you do

ha ha yer 15mpg did suck! it had a weber 45 on it and it never got set up quite right. should have just stuck a fat su on it! hoping to stick with the rover ecu and loom for now as it means i can keep the vvc aspect of it. wouldnt have thought mega squirt would be able to handle variable valve timing? i know emerald do a kit for them but i think if i was going to go that far with it i would go for solid cams and some boooooosst! ;D eaton charger! cheers for the pics there cool! hoping to rip the stupid coilovers off this week and stick a standard subframe in for the time being, eventually i will make my own beam and possibly trailing arms. i would really like to four link the rear just because it would be cool! oh yer when its finished i plan to do hill climbs and sprints with it running in the sports libre class.

Looking nice mate love the wheels amazing colour, are they just 10x6 wellers? do you have spacers on them to clear the brakes you have? Cant wait to see it with the new engine in, should be rather tasty Luke

yer there 6x10 wellers but they have the biggest dish on them ive ever seen! its like the rims been welded on the wrong way round! no spacers! they had all the weller stickers etc on them before i sprayed them so they came from the factory like that! never seen another set! they fit "next to" my 8.4 metro turbo 4pots! ill try and get a pic to illustrate! lol
there miglia extra wide curley fibrglass arches.
cheers for all the interest!
just been tidying out the garage tonight and giving it a nice coat of white paint to brighten it up! plain breeze blocks are so dark! so hopefully should be able to get the car in soon and start ripping it to bits!

OMG hurry up get working I wanna see! ;D Take lots of pics . PS - yeah tbh the rover management wont give you the best possible power/economy as they're generally mapped 'safe' but there really isn't much point messing with it unless you're going to 'charge it, it'll be smooth and driveable and really you're just going for diminishing returns if you start playing with it. It takes months of fooking about to get the same driveability if you go diy management. MS can activate the vvt wherever you want it to. But then it's another added variable when setting the whole thing up lol!

so time for an update... finally got the garage tidy enough to get the mini in! woop! so it went in last night and I took the seats out, de-rubbished it:rolleyes: and then made some tubular seat mounts for the driver seat. tied into main cage hoop and sill/tunnel they have captive nuts for the side mounts to bolt to. might add a eyelet for a crotch strap yet. then sat the dehumidifier in it over night to dry it all out from all this rain weve been getting in Cumbria! so tonight I had the help of Graeme to get some stuf done! we managed to get the rear suspension off along with another snapped gaz coilover! (don't BUY THEM!!!!):!::!::!: get the arches off and also relieve the shell of Gay-series and subframe. so next this week is to tidy up the mess I have made in my garage then get my ass down the scrappys and pic up a metro subframe and rover 200 starter!! then hopefully make some fibreglass door skins and roof panel, also want to do a bit more to the cage to make it tie in with the front suspension pickup points. cheers, chris
