So, finally decided to spend a bit more (a fair bit more!) than what I originally planned for my daily driver. My housemate has owned one for about 3yrs and I really like it, so I bought my own! Had a fair amount of hassle sorting it out, had to replace the clutch/release bearing, and get the handbrake fixed, MOT and Tax it. The bodywork is mint, arches and sills all original, non-welded. Small patch of rust on bottom of rear arch, small bubble on roof, very small rust spot on corner of windscreen, and usual marks for a 24yr old car. Paintwork is original, I'm planning on a buff or possible respray in the near future depending on funds, but for now I'm just loving driving it, and that 4A-GE engine and exhaust sounds wicked! Modifications: K&N Air Filter, Janspeed Exhaust, Direct Throttle Linkage 16" Compomotive MOs with 195/45 rubber Koni Adjustable suspension with -30mm APEX springs (I think) Celica ST185 Front Brake conversion And a beast of an alarm lol. what do you think? ;D

Awesome.... but the big question is, as with all mk1 MR2s... Whats she like for rust under that kit there?

rust isn't too bad actually. The sills have started to bubble at the rear end, inside where the door is, and both doors have a very small amount. The only bit I can't really sort myself is a 3mm hole on the inside of one of the door frames, bottom of B pillar, but I'm gonna treat it at the weekend and speak to the paint guy next week and see how much to sort it all out. This is by far the best Mk1 I've seen in terms of pretty much everything, as it's only done 82k, 3 owners - the first owner had it 15yrs with full main dealer history!!!!
Apart from that, I'm planning on fitting leather seats and door cards, replacing the rear Mk1b bumper with a Mk1a bumper, and a few other bits here and there. I'm also considering gettign rid of all the coach lines around the car, and fit clear indicators to clean the front end up a bit.

That looks awesome. I love mk1 MR2's. 15 years is a long time to keep a car, what makes someone want to get rid after so long?

Lovely - I do like a good clean MR2. Someones added the Mk1b side sills at some point....and there is a chance the rear arches may have been done. A missing mudflap is often a tell-tale sign (nothing negative meant especially as most MR2's are on their 2nd or 3rd set of rear arches by now) Personally - I'd keep the red/black interior....so much more period for a Mk1a. I reckon that colour interior looks amazing. Leather will jusst make it look like a Mk1b inside.....lots of black which can get a bit boring! Unusual placement for the aerial - they are usually at the top of the A pillar on those. Looks quite at home there though... I do love the look of the MO's on your car - they just look so right. Any thoughts on painting them white? Ultimate looks on a red car.... Bookmarked this thread and looking forward to some updates. MM.

All these MR2s on the road now are making me want mine sorted. Looks great, def keep an eye on all grot. The mk1a got side skirts around this age 86 C Or is it really a 85? be worth seeing how those skirts are fitted, factory or DIY job. there was a lot of crossover bits between the a and b and no real way of estimating what exact parts bin raid any one car will have. More fun that way Mine is an early 1985 model as didn't want skirts this time, but later cars have many upgrades. Anyway, keep us posted. enjoy.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Will get some more photos in the week. The rear mudflap was removed to inspect the small bit of rust, both are original. I believe the skirts are original factory, they don't look like they've moved or been replaced/added. The rear bumper is a Mk1b, same as my housemates. The aerial is an add-on the 2nd owner did I think, but it's broke. The original is at the top of the a pillar, but that's also broke, I'm going to get them both removed and welded, and fit a small beesting or something subtle.
All the black trim parts and door handles will be done satin black at some point as they're faded in places and need freshening up.
I've considered either silver or white for the alloys as I am getting them refurbed soon, but I've already got a set of white ones for the MG V8 so may keep them silver.
