I have stumbled across a merc with that chassis number, don't get exited its not that old Its somewhat tatty and needs plenty of work but is currently on the road. Does number 1 of a particular model have more desirability? I have been looking for a merc for a while but never found one that I want until now. But am I getting carried away and about to get my fingers burned?

Well, theoretically it should be the first production version of whichever Merc it is which would make it reasonably special I would have thought.
If it's a pre 83 Merc, digits 9-14 represent the build/construction number, digit 8 represents the transmission, which if 0 like yours means standard trans. Digit 7 though, shouldn't be a 0, it should be 1 or 2 I think, to differentiate between left or right hand drive. That's if it's pre 83.
That said, I have no idea how Merc chassis numbers 'work' so it could mean nothing. Ring a Benz dealer and ask how their sequencing works (but tell him why, otherwise you'll sounds like a dodgy bloke!)
As with all my posts though, I could be talking nonsense...but at least I tried! Still, it gave me and Google something to do for 15 minutes!

If you read the Q&A at the bottom of the listing it says that this car was produced 5yrs into production of the TE (production start 1978, this car 1983) and that the 000001 chassis number comes about because '83 is when Mercedes restructured their chassis numbering. It looks like this car might be the first of the new chassis numbering system, not the first off the production line

It's your purchase, but in the software business version 1 is usually the one to avoid because it's the version where they haven't fixed the bugs yet

if it was the first one, wouldnt it be very rare for it to end up in the hands of a customer? wouldnt the first few be used for crash testing or something?

Well looks to me like its more likely the first one in the new numbering method rather than a first production... early production cars often ended up at press events, so perhaps check the reg against some of the press photos of that make/year etc. Either way its sparked your interest and so may well spark someone elses.. bid what you think its worth ignoring the number.. if it goes for more then it wasn't meant to be. Like you aid you don't want to be buying a lemon.. unless it really is first off the line then even a lemon has some merits!
