I'm looking for something to buy as my next car, I want something I can really enjoy myself in at speed.
What would you recommend?
My short list:
MX5 E30 325i E36 325i M535i AE86

anything with more power than grip will be fun, anything that cormers and grips really well will allow you to break the speed limit or go fast enough round corners to crash.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

out of your choices i'd go for an MX5 if you can live with the comments about your masculinity, or AE86 for slidy in the rain fun, the lighter the better generally for fun and the bimmers are carrying a fair bit of weight in comparison.

Any of the Pug GTis. 106 is a little less lairy than a 205 and is near enough one. 306 and 309 still have some traits of the 205 to them but they are easier to live with day to day. Great fun they are at speed. Only thing is the 306 doesn't feel as fast when you first buy it.

VW Beetle! They're hilarious at speed. IMO, slow cars in general are the most fun to drive on the street, because you can drive something like a Beetle through the winding corners at about 7 or 8 tenths without straying too far over the speed limit, and it's very easy to recover if you shove it into a corner wrong. If you go into a fast corner wrong in an M535i, you may not come out the other side in one piece... just my 2c!

That's fair cop tbh. I will admit that I am enjoying my white MGB at the slower speeds, it is a nice drive atm now the tracking is sorted despite being in standard form.

Well the m535i does have an LSD to keep things in check under oversteer and very good brakes, but I totally understand what your saying, i don't mind if it's not the fastest thing on four wheels, just a pre-requisite that it's enjoyable to own and drive. I would rather it was rwd but I do like the idea of a 1.9 205 GTi with a 1.6 closer ratio gearbox Don't really like the 924 sorry!

'Thrashable' slow cars you can rev the tits off and throw about are the way forwards.

Don't forget the CRX , 16V cars can be had in pretty good nick for under a grand (and are probably more day to day fun than VTEC's), they're amazing to drive and reliable, plus mine does 40-43mpg which even makes it cheap! And being a hatch they are practical too, only down side is the rust around the rear end (but its the same with a lot of your list) - if you buy well they really isn't much to worry about ;D

'Thrashable' slow cars you can rev the tits off and throw about are the way forwards. I drive a lot of very expensive/fast cars in my job. None are as much FUN to drive as the battered Panda I used to own. And it cost me 90 quid - it cost that to fill the tank on my 'work' car

A cracking cheap car that handles so well is an E36 318ti ( M-Sport ) compact. Plenty enough power to have some serious fun on the twisties and go kart like handling abilities! This kinda thing...

The car i've possibly had most fun in was my gen 1 rx7. Proper sports car, well balanced, revvy as hell, noisy with the right exhaust and vague steering to throw in the mix.....Great fun car that's easy to get the back out and catch it again once it's out...

I reckon fun is more about the whole driving experience, not just the handling/performance...
As above, the Midget (though it does handle) is fun 'cos sitting low down, with no roof, is fun.
I loved my old Audi 90 Quattro for the feeling it could tackle anything, and the utterly wonderful 5-pot exhaust noise, probably more than it roadholding/speed.
I find driving transit type vans fun, though i don't really know why, I just do.
Plus it's a personal thing - fun-wise I was totally underwhelmed by a Corrado, and wasn't convinced by a 200SX, yet some people love them (and I assume find driving them 'fun').

If you do end up going for a 205 GTi, make sure you're really thorough about getting the right one. They're incredible to drive - all of the cliches you hear about them are true! Willing, playful, predictable, precise, and just enough lift-off oversteer to scare your mother witless. I've had four 1.9 GTis and three of them were awesome. One of them had been modified by the previous owner and a) you should never dick about with their standard suspension, they're spot-on from the factory and b) everything on it broke and it cost me a fortune to fix. I was young, foolish, and buying on appearances. So don't do that. Go over it with a fine-tooth comb and it'll be one of the best cars you've ever owned.
**edit** Also, I can't praise the MX-5 highly enough - I've got one now and I absolutely love it. No journey is ever mundane, you always feel as if you're actually driving. Holistically, it just all gels so perfectly - sweet revvy twin-cam, lightweight, RWD, wind-in-the-hair old-skool thrills, and the most amazingly perfect gearbox. Every single yard is a delight.

From experience and on the topic of fun I second suggestions of the 205 GTi and the classic Mini.
