Amid the global economic crisis, the classic car market is a rare British success story, but the new scrappage incentive threatens to damage this by paying people to dispose of perfectly serviceable retro and classic cars. This will lead to jobs being lost in the retro classic car industries; meanwhile the vast majority of this scrappage money will go toward subsidising foreign car companies. Given that the most polluting stage of a car’s life is its manufacture, we therefore believe that it is a horrible waste to encourage retro and classic cars to be scrapped in favour of newer models with shorter operational lives. A properly maintained old car not only puts out significantly less emissions (including C02) than is permissible by law, it also prevents the need for other, more wasteful, cars to be produced and consumed. We therefore urge the protection of cherished, well-maintained cars by re-instigating the rolling 25-year road fund licence exemption for historic vehicles. This will help protect our motoring heritage and its manufacturing industries in the face of recent legislation Sign here petitions.number10.gov.uk/save-old-cars/

I'm sure i read that a while back the FBHVC had been told in no uncertain terms that if they kept pushing for this to be reverted to rolling 25 years, that the concession would be removed altogether. I think it all came to a head when they tried to get further exemptions from the LEZ scheme. Hence why they haven't tried in recent years. Basically the government doesn't want it as it is.

That, unfortunatly, is my feeling too. So far, no one is COMPELLING us to scrap old cars in favour of newer ones, and I'm happy with that, but I fear we are stuck with 1st jan 1973 as the cutoff for a classic car, even if it makes no actual sense (lets face it, what about govt policy does?)

Well 1, the LEZ never included cars and 2, The LEZ including transit sized vans has been put back to another consultation, and as long as we vote against it won't return. So lobbying isn't entirely hopeless is it?

I'm all for a rolling tax break but its never gonna get past the green lobby, they hate the older cars anyway and the government increasing tax on gas guzzlers and lowering it on low pollution cars is in no way any indication that they'd allow any more cars to have free tax especially as cars are lasting a lot longer these days and they are already trying to get the older ones off the road.

As far as I can see from the Number 10 petitions that have been run in the past they are a complete waste of time.
ZaNuLabia have the web-site there so people can post these sort of things and then they can just ignore it - witness the road pricing petition that attracted over 2 million signatures, did they take any notice, no, just the usual "la la la, we're not listening".

As far as I can see from the Number 10 petitions that have been run in the past they are a complete waste of time. I wouldn't agree with that statement. The road pricing petition that gathered over a million voters proved otherwise. Road pricing was a central plank of their policy and now it's dead and gone. No doubt the government privately breathed a hefty sigh of relief that they found out just how unpopular it was going to be before they dug themselves into that particular hole. Will this petition do much? Probably not because no matter how important we see it the unfortunate fact is that the masses couldn't really care less. Signing the 50mph NSL petition might work though.

I've made my views about the Downing Street Petition website known many times before. It's a tool designed by the Government to allow the apethetic people of Britain to whine and bleat, in a convenient and easily ignorable location. WRITE TO YOUR MP!!!!!!!!! The Government loves the Petition website, since all it does is funnel the voice of the UK into cyberspace, and no-one even know its there! Better than sackfulls of mail arriving on their doorstep, or people protesting outsite. No, no, lets allow them to sit on their arses, tap a few keys, and think they've done 'what's necessary' to change the minds of the people at the top. For what its worth, I regularly write to my MP, and indeed directly to the PM on some matters, whenever something regarding the Government or its associates irk me.But one letter every couple of months wont change things. A few thousand might, but since so many people are being brainwashed into using the Petition site, it'll never happen. www.writetothem.com/www.number10.gov.uk/footer/contact-us
