Whilst out and about working yesterday i was spotted a 'j' plated Toyota Celica GT4 Turbo on a driveway that looked to have been standing a while (covered in moss and 4 flat tyres!). So i enquired about it and its simply been parked up for 2 years and not used.
He then said i could take it away for £400 - now i'm very tempted but not that clued up about them. Only experience i have of them is going round the nurburgring in one last year and i was very impressed.
He has told me a its a widebody import and runns at around 239bhp - interior is very tidy, paint looks a bit tired and there some rot on the p/side door.
Is it worth a punt for £400? the guys seems genuine enough......could it be broken for parts to get my cash back if turns out to be a dog?
I've never gone japanese before.....

You should easily make your money back if you decide to break it. Find out if it has a chargecooler - if so, that'll get you £150 straight off. At a rough guess (as long as all the mechanicals are working) you should be able to make somewhere around £1,500+ breaking it (probably more) It would be a shame to break it though - st185's are lovely cars and getting harder to find now. If you do buy it and decide to break it, I may well want the front brakes off you....

That sounds cheap. I very nearly bought one of these a few years back but went for the WRX instead. I'd have one tomorrow. Quick things and very under-rated (IMHO)

All have charge coolers, can rust everywhere but especially sills, over engineered like only a Toyota can be and are wild craic cheap as chips and immensely tunable. Downside is that its a 185 not a 165 like mine.

Downside is that its a 185 not a 165 like mine. All have charge coolers yes,but the early ones are air to air (with the bonnet scoop),and the later rc/carlos sainz versions have air to water (with the bonnet vent). Pretty bomb proof engineering.

There is no 'later' ones. The CS/RC were a limited production run. All 165s 205s and RC/CS have water to air intercoolers.
£400 is a complete steal. Buy it immediately and come join us in the GT4EC

Downside is that its a 185 not a 165 like mine. Not strictly true. All have intercoolers. Only the Carlos Sainz and the import version RC model had the liquid charge cooler. Not like the ST165 and the ST205. The bog standard ST185 like I had was a normal air 2 air intercooker over the top of the engine like a Glanza.

Oh and get a ticket on it, fit a proper boost gauge and get a dawes device. Turn the boost upto 11. Watch it fly. Don't go any higher without a fuel computer/ecu replacement/metal head gasket. But given the proper treatment, a 3s-GTE will make 600bhp. Not cheap, but proper.

If you decide to keep it check the heater works and doesn't leak into the footwells!

Personally I'd have a punt at that! Here is a pic of a GT4 for inspiration. Go for it!

watch out for sludge in the water, these things love to blow head gaskets and overheating is a major(and expensive) problem.

Well had another look at this yesterday and i'm going to go for it, only known problem is leak from the right handside of the radiator so hopefully a hose, worst case scenario a new rad (£58 on ebay). Bodywork wise, only rot is contained to the p/side door rest the car looks solid but paintwork is knackered loads of lacquer peel so it will be turning satin black until it gets a full repaint. Hopefully picking it up on Thursday so keep an eye out for a new readers rides thread, planning to get it on the road within a couple of weeks and then a trip to the nurburgring, its going to be my £400 ring car if all goes to plan

I'm looking forward to this, as I really miss my old red ST185. And yes the roof/boot spoiler and bonnet really do fade badly and the laquer can peel.
