Thought I would try the forum's collective of obscure car parts on this one, though it is possibly a bit old for retro A friend has given me an old clock as he knew I am interested in old car bits ;D all that is known about it is that his father bought it probably at a jumble sale/auto-jumble and he thought it was a dash board clock. Anyone have an idea what it is from? and worth for that matter? The marks on the dial are "Jaeger Paris" and "8 Jours" on the back there are the numbers 13581. It measures 80mm diameter not counting the bevel. Not in working order and a bit worn. A bit of googling found this - Which is apparently the dash of a 1934 MG though the Jaeger clocks fitted to those were 60mm diameter according to where I found that pic. My searches are turning up lots of links for expensive household clocks and watches.

Its a swiss 8 day car clock! Why didn't I think of put Jaeger Car Clock in to Google searching Jaeger Clock just got me mostly nice expensive household clocks - I swear my brain has been particularly useless today. This one looks similar-ish though the winder on mine comes off at the 3 o'clock position. from here - listed at 550 euros I have promised my friend half the money if I end up selling it so it looks like he might get a pleasant surprise though given the wear and the fact that it needs work I suspect that I would be lucky to get that sort of money for it.

There are lots of different models of car clocks but they all seem to fetch some sort of money on Ebay and elsewhere. There are various grades of movement and some of the real posh cars (eg Bentley, Bugatti) got very good quality timepieces. I've repaired a couple, one of which was labelled Delage on the dial and the other came out of the dash of this Rhode (a make I'd never heard of) when I remarked asked the owner if his clock worked I'm happy to help if you want it fixing Thanks for that info Seth I cannot afford to have it overhauled at the moment I have worked out how to get the movement out on the dial side it is marked Depose and on the reverse side it is marked Brevet and Swiss Made.

Wow, what a lovely piece!
Id get it either a) into the hands of The Seth or b) sold on
I'm probably dumb but I don't understand why a clock would be '8 day'

IDY, looks like a pretty good movement! (I won't go into gory details of why ) Shame about the dial. Will it actually tick even if for only a few seconds? Only one way up/both ways up? To do that twist it in you hand in a kinda sudden movement to try and get the balance oscilating - that's the bit with the tiny screws around its perimeter in your second movement photo. If the balance wobbles around as though its "axle" is broken then it will cost a bit to repair. If its just fully wound and not running then its probably just gummed up and just needs cleaning - cheaper. If you can continually wind the stem and it doesn't get stiffer - or seems to slip after a few winds then the mainspring is broken - not too costly but a "might as well clean the rest up while its apart" kind of job. JS, as Rottie says, 8 day refers to the length of run-time on a single wind - so basically you'd wind a clock/watch like this once a week. Rottie, no reason not to wind it fully if its functioning properly

It will not tick - the balance wheel will oscillate sometimes but some of the time it is getting caught on something, it has quite a bit of movement so it looks like that is broken It will not wind at all, I do not want to force it

Ah OK, sounds like its probably got a broken balance staff then. That's a part that is probably about 4 to 5mm long in that movement and has 5 different diameters that need to be the correct size, length and distance apart, smallest being the end pivots that will be about 0.15mm dia. We don't do tolerances As Bob says, "can we fix it?" If you can't wind it it means its fully wound and the main spring isn't broken Let me know if you want it sorted. Also tempted to buy it as it is since its nicer than the Smiths one I've got hung up here...
