I'm sure that I saw something on the net about jet powered cars - not your high performance chassis with a rocket on the back, but something that you could use on the road and was in production.
However, I can't find any now. Anyone got any ideas?

Not a current motor, but jet powered nonetheless: And the P6 as it should have been, same engine as above: I did actually find a Rover jet turbine engine on ebay that ahd been fitted to a generator. Was sooooooo tempted to buy it and attempt to shoehorn it into my knackered P6 ;D

Rover were there 1st! But never made production, although the P6 was designed to allow a turbine to be fitted, they made a running prototype and everything, think it lives in Gaydon now? Linky for you www.rover.org.nz/pages/jet/jet5.htmOddly whilst chatting to some engineers in Germany I found out that around the time BMW bought Rover they were seriously looking into turbine engines. Now heres my 21st century idea imagine a plug in hybrifd (alla new chevy volt) but instead of an inefficient, heavy and complicated std car engine for generator power, charge the battery with a small jet running at its max efficiency, my basic cals say it'd be twice as environmentally friendly and since it only has one moving part if made in large quantities would be much cheap than using a 4cylinder petrol in the long run. Plus it could run on any liquid that burns! Perfect ;D (I'm off to go an patent my amazing idea now lol!) edit- damn I got beaten to it! ^^^

I think the Chyslers were the only cars to ever hit the streets with "ordinary" people. Shame how it ended though... Rover went to Le Mans though

Ah brilliant common sense from the British Government with that rover. Come up with a revolutionary new invention that will be a major help winning the war and give it....to a car company who put it in, yes, a car! Great piece of logic there!
(I do remember seeing a blue and white le mans-ish looking car that had a jet in it a the goodwood hill climb a few years ago now, no idea what it was though. Looked a bit like the Chaparaal 2j though)

Shurely the Jet 1 was a p5 not a p6? The Jet 1 was based on a Rover P4 75. The T4 was based on the P6, yet to be put into production. Apart from the naff fuel economy, I'd love to have gotten a T4 if they had ever made them.

Yeah, strictly speaking those are jet cars and the others have gas turbines. Swinny, you're probably thinking of the Chaparal 2J fan car which wasn't actually turbine powered but had fans powered by a separate engine to create a vacuum under the car. antholonet.com/EngineersCars/Chaparral2J/Chaparral2J.htmlThis one is gas turbine powered though, Howmet TX Both were at Goodwood in '07 but I've not got decent pictures of either from then. We were going over the bridge near the house when the Howmet went past underneath us. Loud!

No I know I'm not thinking of that I said that looked a smidge like that! The 2J is a hovercraft turned upside down, i.e. instead of fans blowing the vehicle up on a skirt, it pulls it down on the road. There should b a race series specially for fan cars I've just decided.

The company that builds the Y2K turbine bike (which is road legal) have also put turbines into pickups and hot rods.
