I have removed the front & rear springs from my Datsun & am about to chop them up.I would like to remove 1 coil at the moment I think as I don't want to chop it too low.I have a pic of the front & rear springs & was hoping someone could edit the pic with an arrow to show 1 coil. Also the rear spring top is flat,do I need to copy that after chopping. FRONT. REAR.. Thanks in advance.

here is the first image edited showing one turn. I personnally recomend you to do not cut the spring. The best is to lower using a blow pipe. Good luck ! By allegroman1972 at 2009-03-01

One coil is one complete circle as you're looking down on the spring starting from the end of the spring. You'll probably find you'll need more than one coil chopping though but it's best to do it a bit at a time.

Thanks firstly andrew, great pic, makes sense when you see it!Ablow torch would mean using precise weight on both sides I think & I remember a mate did it years ago with a R5 Turbo & it lent to 1 side!!! Secondly is 2 coils more realistic & would this mean I just cut directly below the yellow mark already made by andrew. I don't want to get this wrong as I imagine it'll be a while before a 100a comes up for scrap.

if you take a coil & a half of the bigger springs & 2 of the smaller ones the car will sit just right the tyre will be about an 3/4 of an inch from te arch lip! just nice ona road car!

torching is not good for springs, and alters the temper, but the way to do it and keep it even is to put blocks under the car so it can only go down as far as you want it to, cant lean over or get to low then.
you should try and get a flat back onto the spring after cutting it or the end of the spring may not seat correctly and it bad cases can wear through the spring seat.

Done but not that happy at the moment.Took 2 out the rear & 1 1/2 out the front but I want more from the front but when I push down on the front the suspension is slightly bottoming out.I'm going to remove the fronts again in the week, strip the strut & change the damper oil for 46 grade instead of 32 to see if this will supress some of the bounce.Anyway here's the pics.... BEFORE.................. AFTER.......................

Paging Johnny Somerset!
His Datsun was rolling low on cut springs before the coilovers I think so he'll be the man in the know. The stance on the back looks just right (although it might settle even lower unfortunately), but I'm surprised if the front is bottoming out after such a small drop!

Even though it was only 1 1/2 coils they were spaced apart quite far.Even though there is a gap above the front tyres & not the rear the sill is level with the ground all the way along. I may have to invest in coilovers

Drive it for a bit, before you cut anything else, it will settle, ie: get slightly lower as you drive it.
Also, bottoming out - is it hitting the bumpstops? If so, can you take them out or cut an inch off them?

Hello? hello? Ah! must be the batphone ringing.
Now, mine was a different model but essentially the same. the strut casting is very tall above the bottom cup. You should be able to get lower without bottoming out. remove or 1/2 the bumpstops (front & rear), that should help.
Try taking out the front springs and measuring the height fom floor to top of arch and compare it to how It is with the springs in...that's your travel potential. If its bigger (and I'm guessing it is) than the movement when you bounce the front end then something else is making the 'bottoming out' noise.
Mine made the noise on every harsh bump...even with the coilovers! I think its just it complaining lol
I cut 4 1/2 coils before I was on the mounts

Right thanks everyone for there input,I think my front shocks are shagged as there is very little resistance but I've been lucky & scored NOS pair from ebay for about £20. I'm still going to take more off the front, however the rears are now touching the lip of the arch so..........................Does anyone know a man with an arch rolling tool or a professional but cheap alternative? Will post pics of the rear tomorrow.

Does anyone know a man with an arch rolling tool or a professional but cheap alternative? Will post pics of the rear tomorrow. Get a rubber mallet and a block of wood wrapped in a jumper and slowly & gently bash the inside of the arches with the mallet, holding the wrapped wood on the outside edge as a 'buffer', so they fold upwards. Gradually is the key - and warm it somehow if you can (heatgun/hairdryer) Thats how I did mine, took about 1/2 hr to do all four
