I picked this up off the for sale board the other week, it's a 72 Fastback, seems to have been around for a while as it has many old show plaques under the bonnet, beginning with VW Action & Gary's Picnic '86. Anyway, it needs some welding, tidying, a dent knocking out the rear wing, and an engine. I've got a good 1600 in the back of my old bug, and a knackered type 3 one to nab all the tinwear off. Anyway, I got it back from my mates to my house last night, so it's now sitting in my garage awaiting me tearing it to bits so I can assess the grot and weld it up I'll get some pics of what I uncover today up later. Mike

Hello Guz, hope you're keeping well Sterling board is for lining out the garage once i get some insulation, need to keep the noise down a bit!!! Indicator wise i think it'll end up with some side repeaters on the front a la this one below, same with the number plate It's staying bumperless as i don't have any, and i don't like the late ones at all! Cheers

Lunchtime update Bonnet and wing are off. Indicators are in the headlights at present! Doesn't look too bad under there, but there's a couple of old grotty repairs: Out with the chisel and hammer then! A couple of moderate sized holes, the bottom of the a post is going to need some surgery, but on the up side it all seems to be confined to the body, the pan is solid Time for some chips!

That looks well wedged in Guz! I didn't get anything done on it today as i'm working nights and didn't get chance, however i've had a look on T3D's website and they do a sill/rocker panel repair panel, which incorporates the bottom of the a post area and sill, so fingers crossed that'll be what i need and save me some work! "i'll just bung an engine in and it'll be right" .... must stop using that phrase!!!! ;D I've also got some recaro's to go in as the seats in it are horrible, going to fit the astrali wheel and my T handle shifter to it too.

Its only metal.... Check out bike fairing lights for indicators. You can get proper small fitting 21W bulbs.

It is, easier if someone else has bent it into shape though ;D Good idea about the bike indicators, I used mondeo side repeaters on my bug but they caused the indicator light on the speedo not to flash, I assume due to not having enough resistance?

Looks good. A little rotten but then it is a 1972 car. Look forward to seeing this, always liked the Fastbacks.
A guy I know from Rugby sold one for £2k apparently and the sills were rotting worse than yours from behind purely down to it having an MOT (ahem!), in addition to a plethora of 'trick' scene bits.

With the indicators, if you take a scrounge, you will find some side markers are long enough to cleanly fill the bumper-bracket hole, which looks pretty cool. I did it on a bug, can't remember what the side markers were off, something Japanese and 80s I think.

Yep, except you may be able to fit a modern electronic flasher unit that can cope. At least I've seen it said that they can but I've never done it! Anyhow better (and more legal ) to have 21W bulbs - I know from experience that people can't see diddy side repeaters.

Front arches=common grot spot. Here is what I was faced withand might give you a better idea of what should be there; The rear sill panels I got hold of needed so much cutting I would have been better making my own; Dave.

Cheers for those pics Dave, The front looks very similart to the state of mine! Did you make the sill panel under the door? or is that a bought part please? I'd ideally like to replace it all as a 1 er. Cheers, Mike

I got the sill panel from Rhod Grubb who is based in Edinburgh. These are the sills he used to supply to T3D and allthough not perfect were pretty close. I think he lists them over on the type 3 and 4 club site occasionally.
Replacing with the long sill makes more sence, I went with what I could get my hands on and found it easier dealing with lining up the door panels without having to worry about the rear inner wing.
Word of warning incase you need a pan half. The T3D one was a mile off being the right shape. I was only using the outside edge so managed to modify it but if I had replaced the pan I would never have got the body back on.
Dave.
