Thought this might be of interest.... "We have the SORN for untaxed cars, now watch out for Insurance SORN. Uninsured drivers could soon be fined without even climbing behind the wheel under tough new proposals. The Department for Transport hopes to curb the one in 20 motorists currently driving in the UK without cover by forcing them to sign a Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN). The insurance SORN would work in a similar way to the road tax notice (left), and be issued automatically to keepers of vehicles not listed on the Motor Insurance Database. Those who don't fill out the paperwork face a £1,000 fine. The new measures should make it easier for police to tell if drivers are uninsured. If approved, the proposals could form an amendment to the Road Safety Bill, which is expected to be passed through Parliament later this year. The database is already in operation which is why you can now renew your Road Tax on the internet (the DVLA know if you are insured or not for your road tax)" Big Brother is watching you....

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

surely there is easier ways of finding out if you are insured on a car. i.e a database linked to every inusrance company in the country that just shows up what cars you are insured on (i.e DOC, or a specifyed car) (they pretty much have a system like this anyway) and when you get pnc'd itll come up with what you are insured on, and if the car doesnt match your policy then your up the shoot etc etc

Interesting. Its a good idea in theory but what about people with traders policys. Or will they now be limited to only driving cars that are already covered by another policy.

Thats all very well until you start getting fines through the post, off someone you don't know, for cars you've a) already done the paperwork for, 2) sold ages ago, 3) never heard of. I think the DVLA's rule that you have to write to them every year to 're-tell' them that your car is not on the road is absolutely disgusting and one of the most fiendish schemes yet passed by the govt. Automatic fines sent out by a computer if you don't tell them something they already know, by a certain date?! Its f*cking proper orwellian that! Astonishing!
And, how many people blatantly drive around without insurance. I have never met ANYONE who does. I'm not saying it doesnt happen, cos clearly it does, but i bet 95% of these 'uninsured drivers' are people driving their friend's car or a borrowed one or whatever, who don't even know they're not insured. Or, people who think they have valid insurance, but then when they have a bump, the insurance co. finds some poxy smallprint clause and refuses to pay up. OK there are a few kevs driving round with invalid insurance, these guys are tw*ts and should be gassed, but I don't like how this so often ends in 'big brother' type legislation where everyone is one a computer database and the computer sends out fines when it thinks it should. At the end of the day, this isnt gonna stop some clueless barry tw*t from having a quick uninsured test blez in his mates car, then ploughing through a bus shelter full of kids cos he's not used to driving it. Not what I call an active road-safety-improving activity. load of bo11ox.

If it weren't for uninsured drivers I'd still have this: Well, I'd probably have sold it by now, rather than having to sell it for scrap less than a year after I paid £1500 for it and after I spent loads of money on it. There should be a holder in your windscreen for an insurance certificate...either showing the cars registration or a trader's policy. I'm sure that would be easy enough, although that way they'd miss some valuable revenue from non-criminal types.

god, its like being back at school again... What does that mean? anyway, don't get me wrong, uninsured drivers are scum! But I bet anyone £50 that this ingenious system of sending out computer-generated fines to folk whose insurance policy has finished, and who havent written a daft letter which says 'I AM FULLY AWARE THAT MY POLICY IS FINISHED NOW, THANK YOU VERY MUCH' would not have saved Rmad's herald, or 99 out of every other 100 cars which have been trashed by idiots driving without a valid policy.

it means that every day it seems that the government find another way to control your life. Don't get me wrong, i agree that ppl who drive without insurance are tossers, but if this goes through, its another bit of our freedom taken away, whats it gonna be tomorrow? Only aloud one car per family, not aloud to spend more than £2.50 on sprouts? I quite enjoy living in a world where i have a choise, and that place seems to be going. Startin to feel a bit like a cock puppet.....

Another example of this over-legislated country we live in. People who go without insurance do so simply because it's a f*cking rip-off. I'm not justifying it in any way, but because it's compulsory the insurance companies can charge whatever the hell they like. If it wasn't mandatory to have car insurance, do you think it would be so much? I don't think so.

I agree with benzboy....
Thing is though.... Recently I've been through a few cars, still got 3, at one point i was driving one for a week, then something goes wrong, so drive another for a bit. Now if that means that I'm going to have to tell the dvla everytime I change the insurance over to a different car that the other is not insured everytime, thats going to give me the royal shitting arseache!
Would cause so much hassle, what about cars that are insured fire n theft only? Or if you have a rag about car you only drive every now n then, i wouldnt want to plan when I'm going to drive it!
Also imagine this, you've put a car back on the road, sent the papers off and start driving it, you'll be getting pulled over every 5 mins for the week or so untill the dvla put the details on the computer!
The government are fuckbags, the lot of them! Just cos they are getting chauffered about everywhere, and get all their paperwork for them, forgotten what its like to own a car!

How about a mandatory insurance for the driver?
Based on income/location/age/hair colour/whatever.
Covers you on cars up to a certain value, engine size or power...
Surely that makes more sense than a SORN on insurance for the car..?

The government can bring in what legislation it wants
It only applies to the law abiding people anyway people who are going to drive around uninsured probably havent got the car registered in their name anyway
I just sold a car to a guy in Southern Ireland He has to have 3 tickets displayed in his windscreen Tax, Test and Insurance
He was amazed that we only have a tax disk and asked how the plod know if we are insured and tested My response was through a producer He was so suprised that cops give you 7 days to run away and hide ( or change vehicle) if you were uninsured
I'm all for a system that stops people driving round and not paying for the essentials when i have to but all the systems only apply if you bother sticking to the law

philj.... but surely if you only have one policy, then each time you swap cars you already have to ring the insurance company to tell them, it's only another phone call.
mr_b.... i think the number of uninsured drivers varies wildly from area to area. here, i'll admit to living in a less than salubrious area and given that 5 cars on my street were clamped for being untaxed a couple of months ago (out of 30 total vehicles) i'd wager that about the same percentage are uninsured. most likely the same cars.
i still think we need some kind of register of insurance, maybe not run by the dvla if they're going to turn it into a cash cow, so the police can instantly tell if a car is insured. they can already do it with tax, and i believe mot certificates are now all computerised. rip down all the speed cameras that are hidden behind trees and replace them with ANPR cameras linked to all three databases.

this is gonna make it more expencive though.... they'll need money for the system and cash for all the letters they're gonna send out, it just another way of gettin money, and ppl who drive with no insurance wil still drive without it, so its just us thats gonna get stung, same as always
