user defined styleset..... you could say "i want yellow flashing text on a lime green background" whilst my settings makes it black on white, all stored in your profile. Porka.net has something along these lines, can also change all the reply/search/bookmark etc buttons to different themes.
keep the quick reply thing though, i like that.
pop-up menus when you hover over usernames for "send this user a pm, sendt this user an email, search for the last ten posts by this user"

I've been having a look around at some of the off the shelf options,.. I might pick up one of the open source ones and extend it... yetanotherforum.net is actually pretty close to what we want already ,.. Re: Colours,.. I can offer alternative styles for the forum, but I chose these colours as they are suppose to be soothing

how much space are we getting to mess with? could we have our own galleries.... much like the "look what's down my road" threads, each user could upload pics of interesting cars they find out and about - to save it from abuse, max two pics per car and nothing owned by the user which would obviously go better in readers rides

I'll have a fair ammount of space, and it'll be unrestricted bandwidth so pictures are'nt really an issue,.. but personal galleries take a bit of administration..

yeah i guess any filestore on the net gets abused.... restrict linking to our own domain?
could also work for project diaries, when you take photos of the lack of work you've done to your ride each week and upload them in a diary format. how about taking that idea and making it into a proper diary, say i set one up for my fastback and put in that i want the interior finished by september 3rd, primer on by october, painted by november etc.... each stage i can upload pictures and show how badly i'm doing. i know a lot of people here work better with encouragement.

Very good idea - if your bandwidth is 'unlimited', how about, further to the diary/project log, an image uploader restricted to the diary/forums? Saves people having occasional hassle with their hosts. Could also tie into the galleries. And speaking of galleries, could we have images assigned tags so that a search for 'Escort' gives all pics of Escorts irrespective of year/show? *n

A right pain to organise, I suspect, but I really love the way that on www.demonvw.co.uk/ you can search the galleries by show, car type and car colour. Shame the site breaks in Firefox...

Keywording gallery entries to make them searchable wouldn't be hard,... but,.. who is going to do the data entry When for example we've put up over 270 pictures for the Retro Cars Show,.. who is going to go through and classify them? Cos I'm not!!

Why not use "Portfolio", it'll do it all for you, or just a spot of meta tagging....

To be honest, I'll do it if enough people thought it was worth the effort, and if HoTWire codes up an interface or lets me know the best way to do it. I spend so much time trawling through image galleries anyway! I just would have to spread it over a few weeks or something... Random other forum idea - some way of classifying thread types and filtering them. So, for example, if you hate eBay threads or threads about J-tin or whatever. It would rely on people classifying their threads when they post them. Problem is, those that drift way from the original topic would be wrongly sorted, so maybe it's not such a great idea after all ;D

HotWire from experience I can recommend VBulletin and phpPhotoPost which is a database driven gallery plug in, this also integrates with VBPortal which is a front end CMS (however I don't recommend the latter). The only problem is it all costs phpBB can do a lot if you are willing to go through and install many of the plugins available which are free. But support in this area is a bit limited and upgrading can become a total nightmare.

Thanks for the pointers MWF, I'll check em out, but I need to have asp(.net) based forum so I can modify it to my liking I've also got to tackle this whole extraction of data from this forum and importing it into the new forum!! (which is a whole different nightmare!)

i'd be happy to spend a few hours over a tagging images if it was useful for people.... i assume it's just a case of click an image, type in "yellow escort mk2 mexico minilites" (as long as it's not a blue golf, natch), save it, click next image..... i'd have no problem with that.
oooh ooh and and and.... how about thread rating? f'rexample if you post a thread about a chavvy fiesta you found on ebay, nobody would rate it as good retro fodder. if you posted a load of pics, or started a discussion that was very retro, people would rate it highly. it might sound petty BUT then you could filter the forum, if you logged on and only had a few minutes you could order the posts by highest rating first and skip out all the stuff that's not retro. it might also alert mods to threads that shouldn't be here like discussions about biscuits and mmm isn't it a nice day.
