Right, as most of you know my Merc has a crumpled wing due to some dozy fool (me) parking it inside the loadspace of a Vauxhall Corsa (every cloud....)
As I'm going for the "hard as nails" look complete with matt black "stealth" paint, I'm in two minds whether to do a nice job straightening the panel and smoothing it, or whether to clout it with hammers and dollies til it looks more-or-less OK and then whack some paint on it... I'm favouring the last option at present as I am an impatient sod and want to get shoe-horning the V8 in without poncing about with bodywork... ...any opinions?!

I'd get it looking as straight as possible personally,.. if later you want to go full house custom route with some nice spangly paint work you'll wish it was straighter!

Is it just bent outer panels? If so, just whack 'em into shape for now, and replace with brand-spankers at a later date, should you feel the need to 'go posh'.

Get it roughly-straight now, crack out the matte (not satin) black or even better, OLIVE DRAB!
Then get on with menacing the locals.
Is the lump ready to be dropped in then?

Thanks . I was thinking I could just buy a new panel if I felt the need for straight panels later on. The lump is nowhere near But I'm now getting hacked off with it all and want to rip out the 2.0 and box, flog it off and then I'll have no choice but to get on with it! I am in two (or three) minds on the colour - the bonnet and one wing are already satin black, but now I want matt or possibly even drab olive. But that'd require a big tin and some sort of compressor gear - I'm afraid it's rattle-cans or nowt with me! ;D

I might be sorting some premises out in the near future, with any luck, so I can spread all the bits out and get stuck in!

Thanks . ... some sort of compressor gear - I'm afraid it's rattle-cans or nowt with me! ;D Do you have one of those Hoovers with the hose ...and the accesory insect sprayer?,I know a few guys who have used them succesfully to paint cars,...But why spray?,get some of the colour you want in enamel ,put the paint can in a bucket of hot water so it floats ,the hot water warms the paint so it flows really nicely and you BRUSH IT ON ! You won't have any brush marks and if you slash out on the best quality brushes you won't have bristles stuck in the piant when it drys (like a stray pube...) It takes a while to dry but if do it outside and then put the car in the shed and leave it for a day or two you will have pretty good result. No need to mask up ,you can get flattening agents for enamels for a Matt finish,it's a lot cheaper than spraying pint,It won't react with original finish, and if you scratch it you can just brush some more on.And you won't be killing thec rest of us by destroying the ozone layer with the areosols.

Compressors don't use CFCs The problem with your idea is that anywhere in britain, dust and grime would setlle on the car before it dried. *n

I thought of that,I've sprayed cars outside here in OZ,and you don't know what dust is until you have lived in western New south wales... ;D.You wet the ground down in a big enough area to settle all dust, the biggest problem i would have thought would be moisture?. But he wants the matt finish ? so whats a bit of dust? Does it look like this then Benz Boy Ol' Mate?

^ Heh, yeah it looks pretty similar actually! Brushing it on would be good but as it stands I don't have any storage space - the car's outside (although hopefully this will change soon). I can bet that it'll either p!ss down with rain or a cat will walk across the bonnet whilst it's drying! I don't mind about the finish too much - the rougher the better
