Could it not just be an early Trabbi with later trim?
A likely scenario given that (a) In cold-war east germany you'd probably enhace / repair your car with whatever was to hand and (b) I would think ther would be a high degree of interchangability between early and late trabants.....

Doesn't bother me. Tax exempt = bonus! If you are knowledgeable about trabbies and you are sure its not really 1968, (and that bothers you) don't buy it! I don't see how anyone's getting shafted here.

The reason being... (And I agree with your statement though Tax exempt = bonus.) If more and more people start 'clonning' to save £170 or so quid (which in a way I can understand) then it will be highly likely that the Tax exemption will end up getting scrapped and all will have to start paying again (which wouldn't supprise me with some members of our present government...any excuse to rake in more taxes). A case of give an inch and some people take a yard?

I see what you mean Twincam, but the government know that there are only a finite amount of pre-73 motors out there, and will have budgeted accordingly. It's not as if people are creating more tax exempt cars, just swapping one for another. But yeah, I don't trust this government as far as I could throw them either! One of the reasons why I've not bothered with LPG - as soon as there are enough people on it, they'll start taxing it. Thieving buggers! ;D

Point taken , Quite right. It's just as I said before, i'd put nothing past this government and I was only thinking of the many members who have tax exemption cars on the site (it would be a crying shame if they had to start forking readies out again).

The worst case I've seen over here was a 95/96 Land Rover 110 TDi running on a 1954 registration. I've seen a lot of Range Rovers 4 doors running on old 2 door model registrations to avoid tax which is based on cubic capacity over here until a vehicle is 30 years old

there are a couple of pre 73 mk2 escorts round this way now that really is taking the pee Yeah thats pretty shocking - blatant fraud and likely to be used against the old car movement by the fugging politicians etc if these greedy tw*ts get rumbled. I'm all for 'intelligent' interpretation of this tax-free carry-on but if you're gonna do that, where do you stop? a 1971 Mondeo TCDi? Short-sighted w*nkers.

There loads of late Mini`s around with pre `73 plates, a few have even made it into the mags. One Mini specialist was (allegedly, of course) registering MPI Mini`s as pre `73 so they could be shipped to the US ....
Trouble with Mini`s is that it`s quite hard to prove as it could have been reshelled with a new bodyshell with the later lights and fittings ...

I think that's not too bad, but cars that were never built in the pre-73 bracket and having "historic" identities is ridiculous - and as NrB put it, just blatant fraud. PS: Anyone know of a rusted-to-curse word pre-73 Merc W115 going cheap?!

True that, at least that Trabi could concievably be a modified 68, but stuff like 73 Escort mkIIs and later Minis on 60s plates is taking the p*ss, and it's only going to get the rest of us into trouble more than likely, seeing as it gives Blair and his cronies ammunition to use against us whenever he decides to f*ck about with the tax exemption date again, which no doubt he'll do eventually. All he needs to do is point out a few fraudulent b*stards, then exaggerate and saying that everyone with a pre 73 car is doing the same as them, and that we're stealing the taxpayers money, and the Commons'll have no problem with taking the exemption away altogether. Some of you from outside the UK are probably thinking that this all sounds a bit ridiculous and he wouldn't do that to us, but he has before, believe me. This is the same party who changed the tax exemption laws from all cars over the age of 25 qualifying, to only cars made before 1973. And he's not above lying through his teeth either, this is the same guy who claimed to have undisputable evidence of Saddam Huissen having nukes, then had to admit later that he was talking sh*t, so I wouldn't put anything past him!

on the subject of changing vehicle identities, and possibly a little off topic, swapping vehicle details is endemic in the custom motorbike world. Its common for home built custom frames to be simply stamped with the frame number off a logbook. I'm not condoning this but it is a means to an end when you want to avoid a possible q plate and/or a SVA test. A strict MOT center would probably fail a bike with a home stamped frame number but there are loads of less strict places that simply arent bothered

Fair play to em I say. They're not bothered..... cos it doesnt matter! I'm sure if they suspected anything genuinely sus was going on (i.e. beyond someone doing their own frame) they'd fail it soon enough!
