Hello everyone - my first post on RR (been a bit of a lurker recently!) I've returned to an AW11 after a few years driving italian, owned a white N/A '89, and a japanese-import '87 SC previously - so it seems they're in my blood now. I've picked up an '88 sunroof white N/A in the past few weeks, hope to embark on a project of drastic weight-loss (I've got my spreadsheet at the ready - which I'll be documenting. The car is almost completely rust-free, which is incredibly rare - so I'm hoping it should make a good base. Current state of the car:- And my old SC (which I never should have sold!):- I'll be documenting the progress in the coming months. Starting with weight loss/suspension/wheels - and moving onto a blacktop 20v 4AGE swap towards summer time. I can't hope to compete with some of the other AW11 builds on the board at the moment; bu hopefully it should be interesting all the same! Cheers, Adam B

Hey Adam,
I like the sound of what you're going to be doing to this car.
I too have just 'come back' to MR2's after 9 years away from them! Must be something about them??
I recognise that car - it was for sale in Brislington, Bristol. How do I know? I test drove it! Seemed to drive really nice and was certainly better than some of the other MR's I'd looked at.
Where are you based? Might be interested in some bits off the car if you're stripping it down? If near Bristol, we might be able to help each other out on the builds?
Anyway, best of luck getting it sorted and I look forward to seeing the progress....
Bruce.

firstly lovely mr2! secondly you should be shot for selling a SC mk1!!!!! despite the obvious what are the plans for weight loss? i don't think you can get many carbon parts for the mk1. which is a real shame!

Hi Bruce, I like your thinking! All of the interior will be going, all panels in both boots, tool kit, spare wheel, etc etc all off too; so I should have plenty of parts available. I'm based in Aylesbury/Oxford, I'd love to give you a hand with any work you'll be doing - so I'm sure we can sort something out. I'm often going to Devon (folks) and Wales (brother at university) so I often find myself going through Bristol. Ditto on the build - I can't wait to see how yours progresses (you are starting with an unfair advantage though ) Speedle, I hope to have engine cover, rear boot, sunroof panel headlight covers and possibly the front bonnet and wings in composite by the end of the project. Luckily the panels are very flat and simple to replicate. The odd panel is available (bonnet, wings for example). First job is suspension - I'm thinking of having some struts made up by GAZ; I've heard good things.

A few ghost posts there! ;D He great idea, my second and now only MR2 will be getting diet treatment, seems like a good idea. getting lapped in a mates at teh MR2 track day by cateram typethings planted that seed. Prob is I like the parts like interior too much and want a basic cage in mine so the scales are getting heavier! doh! we'll see. Keep us posted should be fun, and interesting.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Ah! Apologies, the forum was dying on me and didn't appear to post. Rectified! I'm trying to stave off the temptation to go all out on weight removal; as it's currently my daily driver.

looks like a sound project has inspired me to dig out my mr2 mk2 from the back garden and start sheding some of its weight will start a thread if i get some decent pics at the weekend mines a h plate 90 so one of the first and has more rust than yours but I'm interested in what weight can be shed. Mine has the same huge removeable sunroof. Are you going to keep yours in I utltimately want to use mine as a track day and may replace wieght by cageing it and am thinking of welding some sheet steel in and respreying the roof in a different colour.

Well with the help of my darling fiancé, I have a lovely spreadsheet created that is listing all removed parts, their respective weight, current weight, target weight - and amount of weight to lose before target is hit. The car needs to go on a weighbridge, but I'm starting with a rough guess of 1050kg. Ultimate target weight is 800kg, and anything under would be fantastic. I think 800 is an ambitious target (I don't expect to lose much more than 100-150kgs with all the interior removed, seats replaced, sunroof replaced etc), but it's one to aim for. As for the sunroof - there are a few ways of going with it. The glass on its own can be replaced - keeping the surround. Alternatively a sheet of aluminium or carbon can be bonded into the hole (the most likely route I'll take). The issue is that most of the weight is in the actual steel sunroof surround itself, so the 3rd (and best) way would be to cut out roof panel itself; and replace with new steel.

Take the kit off so it looks like an mk1a, not only will you be saving weight, it will also look so much better, oh and lose the spoiler...

Bit of work done today - freezing cold weather here, but bright at least. During the week I traced the bad (very bad!) smell in the boot, to the water-logged foam under the carpet. This was removed, which improved matters no end. I also chucked the cheapo black and blue matts in the cabin. Today I embarked on removal of the horrendous alarm, and some panel removal:- Box to be removed. And off (brackets came too). Alarm in situ And out! Panels also gone, from the boot:- Clean behind the panels:- Everything has been weighed:- Boot foam + matts = 3.6kg Alarm = 0.8kg Boot panels = 2kg Centre console box = 0.95kg Centre console box braqckets = 0.28kg Stereo (Standard Toyota double-din) = 2.8kg So total lost this week = 10.43kg

It's a daily driver and the first thing you chuck out is the radio?! Congratulations, that is truly hardcore and I take my hat off to you. I'd be interested to see some kind of performance test done before and after the weight reduction as well, like a 0-100 or skidpan test. I often have dreams of ripping out the interior of my Beetle in the quest for lightness but I'm unsure how much actual difference it would make to the performance, given I'm probably around 8-900kg anyway to start with. It would be interesting to see, for example, how many seconds per circuit lap/quarter mile or whatever you save per kilogram. Not to mention that you also save on fuel, tyre and brake wear, etc. I wish you luck in your project in any case, a lighter car is a better car!

The plan was going to be to keep it semi-civilised initially - but after examining the stereo wiring (hacked to death by a previous owner), I'll be missing that part out entirely (the standard stereo didn't work anyway ). Performance tests sound like a good idea - I might have to look into that! I need to get an accurate current weight on the weighbridge at work, and a rolling road on the standard engine too.

Finished off removing various bits from the boot today. Removed the horrible aftermarket electric aerial and plugged the hole. Removed the remaining boot panels, and started on the intake pipe removal (after picking up a k&n on the 'bay last night).
Weights as follows:-
Air pipe A - Rear offside quarter 0.31 Air pipe B - Rear long pipe 0.75 Air pipe C - Rear offside water trap 0.3 Air pipe D - Rear small pipe 0.2 Electic aerial box 0.7 Rear boot panel brackets + bolts 0.3 Rear boot panels 2 0.4
I also picked up some 1mm thick carbon fibre sheet, for fabricating a cover for the engine bay to boot hole, and a cover for the ECU (as it is now exposed in the boot).

did you start on the bio-tuning as well ? ;D (loosing some weight yourself . . not just the car)

Hey ghost, where did you get the carbon fibre sheet? Did you buy it as flat sheet already made and cured or are you laying it up yourself from mat and resin? It seems that carbon fibre material is difficult to get hold of at sane prices.
Also, lol at the bio-tuning! I certainly know that I could probably lose a significant amount of weight from my car/driver combo by losing the "spare tyre".

Beautiful weather here today - what better excuse to work on the car! After deciding to remove the speakers (no stereo, and never will have) - I also thought that I might as well remove the associated panelling. At the back this leaves, the bare metal looking like this:- After a bit of polish, the interior painted metal came up looking really good. The speakers I found in the car aren't actually too bad:- 4" co-axial Pioneers in the front, 3.5" co-axial Alpines in the rear. Perfect for anybody else looking to improve upon the standard paper-coned pap. Let me know if you would like them. The removed panels, came to this pile:- Weights at the bottom. I also received my carbon fibre sheet:- From Xs Sport on ebay. 1mm thick 2x2 twill. This will be used for various things, making a quick cover for the ecu, capping the air-intake route from boot to engine bay etc. Last weekend I also removed some panelling from the front boot, and had a peek:- Pretty clean, you can see where brake-fluid over-fill can corroded the paint a tad though. So, weights in kgs are:- Sunroof cover 1.4 Sunroof mount front boot A 0.2 Rear interior panels 1.4 Speakers 1.3 Total lost to date = 18.89

Nice work. Looks like it's coming along well.... Are you re-fitting the spare wheel? If not, remove the metal bar/cage in the front to save some more weight. I'll probably take the speakers off you - let me know how much you want? I know you are trying to lose some pounds (lbs) but I am sure you'd like to gain some pounds (£'s) Are you going to be removing the 'A' & 'B' pillar trims too? What about the headlining? Sunroof latch covers? How stripped are you looking to go?? Having had my interior completely out, might be able to give you some pointers? I've now got myself an industrial unit for playing with cars, so if you fancy a trek over to Bristol, you're welcome to book in for an afternoon of 'weight watchers' and we can watch those pounds come flying off! The beauty of the new unit....if it's raining, then play continues....Let me know?? Also, have you found anyone making carbon body panels yet? If not check this out: AW11 Carbon Fibre Front Wings @ £200 each or £380 pair AW11 Carbon Fibre Hybrid Turbo Engine Cover @ £225 AW11 Carbon Fibre Bonnet @ £285 AW11 Carbon Fibre Bonnet Papal @ £325 All prices include VAT Hmmmmmm - carbon! YUMMMMMY!!
