I was getting some cutting discs for the MGBs today, when I noticed an Auto Dimming helmet for £65. It seems to be worth a shot, but I thought I would see if there are any problems with them.
I cannot seem to find this on the web, I think it is a Kennedy or Nielson item. It starts off at Grade 4, and is active between 9-13, with the delay and sensitivity being set to however you want it. It changes in around 50ms with the delay being around 0.1-0.9s I think (I'll have to call them as they don't seem to have a website (It's from GTSS Engineering if anyone can find out more info). It's solar powered too.
It's tempting as it would tidy up my starting points to no end IMO.

www.cromwell.eu/pdfs/0900Welding.pdfPretty sure the Auto Dimming one on the last page or so is the one I was looking at today. Half a second just strikes me as slow, although it can withstand MMA/MAG/MIG apparently.

Kennedy stuff is generally excellent. I've got a mate who works for Cromwell & gets it for me, never had any problems with anything, so doubt the welding mask will be any different. As long as it conforms to the relevant safety standard, surely it'll be fine?

Yep, half a second is 500ms, 0.5ms is half of one thousandth of a second, so much quicker! lol

Problem I found with cheaper ones are the Sensor distance. I had a cheapo one that cost me about the same as that but to get it to actually register your welding you had to be really close. I changed all the settings but still nothing.
Pay for what you get, I suppose it would be ok for small amounts of welding but for long runs you will notice some discomfort, had this too and it aint funny LOL.

Brilliant bits of kit. I've got a decent one (can't remember the brand now) and would thoroughly recommend one but would suggest getting a solar powered one as they're self charging with the light from the welding. I usually leave mine on a window sill for half an hour before I start if I haven't used it for ages, just to make sure there's a bit of charge in it to start with.

Looks like the same lens that comes in the bigger brother of my budget mask. It'll be fine and it's substantially quicker than mine.

I think the Sealey one should be a good bet. So far I've been fine with their stuff. Very similar priced to this one. There's one of those on eBay.
Well, we'll see if it is any better than some of yours, or if I'll get the pain that Nathan talks of. Hopefully I won't LOL!. And it is indeed the very one in the manual.
Nathan, when abouts did you get yours? It seems that they are getting cheaper. Must be the poor strength of the pound I hope (rather than quality issues LOL).

a little experience... i got one at £58. they're all the same one (kennedy, whatever make i got, a couple of others too) in round that price bracket. the industrial factor salesman showed me 4 different ones that were all identical apart from branding.
anyhow they supply around about 2-4000 welders in this area (like 10 miles radius) so they don't sell curse word. and its far too slow. lots of flash when you try to use it and it cant react quick enough, no matter the settings.
fine maybe for small amounts but not if you want to attempt a welding marathon, as i did. not worth losing your eyesight for any cost saving IMO.

I got a Parweld XR914H helmet from Ebay for 44 quid delivered. Bargain ;D All the reviews on the Mig-welding forum reckoned this was the best value helmet for DIY use but, as mentioned, it looks exactly the same as a Sealey one and several others I saw just with different stickers. It's been fantastic so far - well worth the money. Beware of the cheap Chinese auto-darkening helmets that are about on Ebay. They are cheap for a reason.
