Broke down twice on the way to work,.. had RAC out twice,.. my distributor cap has gone and there none of the motor factors round here have the right one (including GSF),..
Now I'm stuck in work,.. I need to get home to let the dog out curse word curse word curse word curse word!
Car can kind of limp around the place, so may be able to get it sorted...

Have you tried Halfrauds, Cafco, Unipart, AutoParts etc?
Have you not got a Lucas shop / branch near your work?

Tried almost everywhere (and I work on an industrial estate),.. going to go to a motor electrician place near here. Its the logistics of it that make it hard,.. basically I've got to write off the rest of the day of work. Then limp my way to the place, who knows if the car will make it... I caused a nice big jam this morning when it broke down.

You shbould be able to get one shipped to you today - they'll charge a delivery cost but it won't be much.
Is it just warn out, or is it cracked / split etc?

Worn out,.. the contact points are worn,... problem is no one knows what the correct cap is,.. 3 different places gave me 3 different caps and none of them fitted,.. going to attempt to take it to that vehicle electrical place. Fingers crossed I get there.

Could you not take it off the car and get someone to drive you there?

Are you 100% sure its the cap? If it looks manky it's worth replacing anyway, but Mk3 Golfs (and other VWs of the same era) are well-known for having the Hall sender in the distributor fail. I've had it happen to me. If the new cap doesn't sort the problem, I'd change the sender next.

I think it is definatly the cap as you can hear it sparking,.. how hard is the hall sender to fix? Or is that going to be a whole new distributor...

I think the Hall sender just slots into the side of the distributor body, possibly with a retaining screw. I don't have a Bosch dizzy to hand right now... However, if you can hear it sparking your diagnosis may be right. I've never come across that before.

The connectors on the cap are really warn down,.. can't see any cracks or splits though,.. taking it to this auto electrical place at 2,.. What a curse word day.

Want to swap a mk3 golf for your mini. I want a small car!! I've got a '95 Citroen AX10 about to become redundant. 4-speed, manual windows and locks, no PAS, airbags or ABS. Bare- basic supermini. Drive it foot to the floor everywhere, carry as much corner speed as you dare and never, ever use the brakes. It's more fun than you'd think...
