We'll that's that. Repair bill for the Golf came in at £4000 with a new VAG engine or £3000 with a second hand engine.
Was offered the grand total of £200 for the car as it is. Gutted. Just put two new rear tyres on to get to Devon so that was £120 down the drain.
Cost £40 to recover it to the garage so I'm a whole £160 up on the deal.
Welcome to 2009!

It's not a dealer. It's a standard local lock up garage. I'm guessing it's two, two and a half days labour to haul the old (1.8 turbo) motor out, strip it, bolt it all back together and get it back in.
I'm in Cirencester, the car (1999 GTi) is in Devon. Options for scrapping are limited.

When my the engine on my second L200 went (big end failure) I was quoted £6000 plus vat to have a new Mitsubishi engine fitted. The warranty I'd taken out when I bought it only cover the first £1000! Guess I should have read the small print!
Eventually the garage sourced a second hand motor (with no guarantees!) and fitted it for £3500. SWMBO still not amused at putting out £2500 on it!
Its a no win situation - put out a huge amount to get it done and lose out when yu come to sell, or ditch it as it is for a huge loss!

Even 3 days, at £50/h*, plus VAT = £1218 Say £80 on consumables? VAG 1.8T engines aren't £1700 secondhand... I guess they know too well that you are not local and are not a member of a recovery service *That's F-in-L's garage hourly charge at moment

Fuggin Nora, whoever offered you £200 for it clearly had ideas on fixing it up themselves - ca$hback! they're not the highest tech car out there, I would bet £500 would buy a decent SH engine and a couple of days work would see it back in business.
Find a better garage! Thats my tip.

Ditto. Might be able to signpost you to any VW specialists if anything, or advise of any local recovery companies. Be careful the garage doesnt try to stich you for the diagnosis and storage charges... Looking on ebay there are second hand 1.8t engines for about £800 or so.

some one at my work place had a mk4 gold was a 1.4 petrol and basically she didnt change the oil only kept topping it up! well the conrid decided it didnt like the side of the engine so left!
cost her 2k all in to get a warrented engine from heathrow engines or something like that. (nr heathrow airport)
apparently they said the 1.4 mk4 vw engine isnt too strong and is known for bits wanting to leave! but youes is a gti lump so shouldnt be too hard to get a lump off the bay etc
