Purely theoretical of course... Does anyone know if the Zetec lump would mate straight up to the Mk3 Escort gearbox? I have a feeling they used the same bellhousing but not entirely sure... Might be changing the clutch on the Scrote soon and, well, a few more bolts and the engine's out.... know what I mean? ;D

Pretty sure they will match up OK. The Zetec mates to the type 9 as well as the CVH so should work the other way round too.
Most Ford engines mate to most Ford boxes - IIRC the Duratec doesn't though being a Mazda (?) engine.

yup thats right about the duratec, but pretty much everyother ford engine will match up to whatever else as they stuck with same bellhousing pattern for ages like.

Yeah its a fairly straight forward swop. The zetec bottom end is popular with RS Turbo boys as its stronger and higher capacity. You might have to do a bit of mixing and matching with the clutch though, and you'll need mapped ignition unless you can get hold of a very late cvh escort or fiesta with distributor-less ignition and rob the setup off that.
I've been doing a lot of reading up on zetec conversions recently. Shame i cant get round to doing one though ;D

Thanks for the info guys. Helpful as always. The ignition stuff might be a problem - I never thought of that! I was thinking I'd bin all the injection gubbins for twin 40's, but of course that doesn't solve the dizzy problem (or lack of...) Definitely a "back-burner" project, but at least it's do-able, and fairly easily by the looks of things!

I reckon the 5-speeder that I have at the minute is pretty good... I was just thinking if I came across a cheap Zetec at the scrappers I could snap it up, for later use... big project to do on a daily driver though . Maybe when the Merc is finished...

I'll look into that Merc too - is it a stacklight like mine or a W123. If it's an auto I could do with the propshaft.

all ford lumps match up to (pretty much) all ford boxes!
theres a metal palte that goes inbetween the 2 that often needs fiddling with to get the right size

Would it not be asier getting a mk5 escort and putting in engine and box and loom. Engine mounts might need a bit of fabrication. I think the front ends are pretty similar on both arent they?
