I'm fancy some of those mini cone filters to go on my throttle bodies once i get them bolted onto the Escort, and theres a shop seliing em cheap as chips on eBay - £6.99 for a set of four. linkyWhat i was wondering is, as they're so cheap, might they be really rubbish? ie, not very good at actually filtering? I don't want to wreck my engine because I'm being cheap. Proper K&Ns or Pipercross jobbies will probably be at leat 3 times that price each. Any thoughts? Should i steer well clear, or should i go for it, as all they have to do is filter air, which cant be that complicated anyway? Plus they do look pretty nifty, with the chrome ends n all Thanks! Rich.

As above. I'll find some tests that I had to hand soonish, but basically, it showed that the cheaper air filters didn't do much in terms of filtration, with K&N, Apex and PiperX being fine, but with some of the pricier brands like HKS, and Blitz actually being worse than the middle drawer items.
One thing I know is a mate of mine used to love his cheap filters, that was until the metal part debonded itself . It didn't half feel cheap.
Personally, I would be tempted to get a panel filter cheap off ebay that's in good nick, and then fabricate an airbox from steel or ally. I know a mate of mine did this with fine results in his D-Type replica, but how well it would work in this case is uncertain, and that was only sucking in for two SUs.

I would be very careful with cheap ones as filters do disintegrate and end up in engines!

I ran a cheapo filter like that on my Mini for a while and, whilst it was better than having no filter at all, all that shiny plating very quickly turned into a scabby mess.

The HKS super expensive super power flow and the Blitz sus filters aren't that good at filtration tbh, neither are un oiled k&n's....the better the filtration, the worse the flow......it's not too much of a worry in our non-dusty country anyway though.

Handful of used tea-bags and cig filters in an empty beans can with holes in it?
I wouldn't recoment cheapie ones, for the reasons above. Plus a mate had one that the mesh split on and sent bits of said mesh into the engine.

Had those sort of filters on bikes before, no engines imploding etc but as keithyboy says, they can go scabby fairly quick, the chrome is about as good as licking chewing gum paper and sticking that on...
