sorry for the non retroness of the thread, I will make up for it shortly. I'm curious to know which of the cars you would choose, and why. does anybody have any first hand experience with either car?particularly the merc. and, does anyone have pics of either car pimped? my google fu is weak on these two. cheers.

Zin Zinnahhhhh.
Because modern mercs are screwed together with 0% quality. Hey, it's a Merc, they'll buy it anyway. Won't they?

Had an E34 518 and while underpowered was responsive through corners and awesomely comfortable! I have been in lots of mercs and thought that the interiors are often sterile and quite 'hard' also for some reason, I could never get the driving position quite right in the merc. Rysz.

I looked at - and test drove - a 'mint' E430 Avantgarde Estate.
I don't want to think about it too much but in short it was horrible. As such I will vote BMW. That's actually a good car.
Next question.

The W210's are the last of the good Mercs. I've had two of them, an E240 and an E280, and I never got less than 400,000 miles out of them without any major probs at all. If you get the Avantgarde version they come with lowered sports suspension and handle an absolute dream. My only complaint would be the traction control that just won't let up even if you turn it off. Would I have a Beemer?......I would never pay my own money out for one. . For a 'drivers' car they certainly don't handle any better than the Merc and the interiors on them is so basic and plasticky compared to the Merc yet you pay more for the priviledge. That should get me into trouble with most of the board. ;D

youll be able to buy an e39 as they're way cheap
even the v8
buy a diseal put a 540 badge and find some V8 cross spokes
old man has saloon and its ace (i might nearly buy it)
merc e classless is just no - audi avant consider too
late 90's avant excellent built better than either and the 130 tdi is quicker than the petrols
bro chipped his and he took it off cos it was too fast lmao

That Era Benz has serious quality control issues.....in fact they are so s**t I just threw one away!!!!..............you'd be better off with a W124 model
Also they are completely uninvolving to drive and as someone else has mention the BMW ( even the smallest engined model ) is a hoot to drive!!!

i'm biased but in all seriousness, the bmw ain't built like the older fives either. they're not bad but they don't fit together like an e34. we have a derv merc estate of that era at work. its a sod to gget the right bits for as there's at least two choices for everything. I don't like the throttle as it does nothing for about 1/4 of its travel but I think thats a merc thing. steering lock is impressive as with all 90's mercs. interior is pretty rubbish IMO, cloth interior is more fitting to a ford KA than a mercedes. ther is more room in the merc tho and more boot space. out of those two the beemer wins it. a nice 523 or 528i with a stepronic auto, lovely so long as they don't go wrong an early car is OK. post '98 gets the double vanos engine and better rear window regulators. be a pimp and put airbags on the front. they have them as standard on the back of e39's ;D if you go down that route, I can give you some pointers to look out for

If it helps, a mate of mine has a 523i that he's hd for years and it's as good as gold despite having a trillion miles on it. I must admit I've thought about both but ultimately I find the Merc a bit sterile. I decided against the 5 because I'd have to have one bigger than my mate's because I'm childish.

The Bimmer surely, much more wantable looks if you ask me.
Wait, you did ask me... ;D
The Mercedes is a good car, but does not stand out in a carpark for me. But a BMW will always turn heads, not only for their cool 'sore throat' engine sounds.

The Merc is fugly, the BMW is a good looking car. The Merc is for being driven in, the BMW is for driving. James Bond has driven BMWs, Spectre drive Mercs.
Nuff said!

Mercs are excellent mile-eaters, rather than corner-chuckers. I love 'em. Older ones anyway. Will be hunting a W124 wagon soon I think. Re Hairnets post we've got a '96 A4 Avant Quattro, ultra reliable, hard to unstick in the corners, etc. Brakes feel wooden though and my six-two carcass can't get comfy on a long haul.
