Okay, so I'm sick of sitting here being sad and depressed thanks to this most pointless time of year. Urgh. So, in a bid to cheer myself up I thought I'd get some of your thoughts and feelings on a car based issue: what car I should build as a project on PF. All input and ideas are welcome, it's what we as RR do, after all. So, this is obviously going to be in line with Performance Ford and it's going to cater to our readership, but I want it to be a bit more "out of the box" than would be expected. Yeah, I could aim for a YB powered Sierra, or try to build a tasty RS1600i or something, but that's a little bit, well, stale if you ask me. So, that's why the current idea for a project car (bearing in mind I'm thinking about April at the soonest as that's when I should be bcak on my feet) is a touring car....namely this one.... ...just without the graphics. I figure as a base car they're certainly cheap enough but the end result would be ace. I'm thinking it'll have to be 'that' low and it'll have to have 'those' wheels (God knows where from!) and it'll have to have a tasty engine too. The actual cars were, as the livery suggests, V6 cars but I was thinking about keeping it as 2.0 Zetec with some nice mods. But that's all to be decided.... I hope this is on topic, Mondy saloons are pretty old now, and pretty unloved. Everything has potential, right? So, what are your thoughts, if any? Do you think I should build something else? Tell me, I want to know. NB, all this is well into the planning stages, but it goes without saying that I will have a car for the mag at some point and I don't think my daily shed of a 1.6CL Escort will do it! Chris

can you get a J plate mundano? then you ditch the cat and bike carb it tsw hockenheim R's for the ultimate win too it would look hot and has been on my list of wishes for someone to do for a while. anyone remember the spy shots of the orange btcc style laguna in street machine that ran a rover v8? or you could get all technical and run the driveshaft through the V like the real v6 ones

Cool project. A very long time ago, someone I knew, knew someone who once fitted a kitchen for someone else blah blah blah... who had an old cavalier BTCC and was selling it. It was silly money though and completely out of my league - but those few minutes of fantasy....COOL. I suspect it would have to remain a trackday toy as getting it registered and road legal would have been a hassle.....but starting out with a road legal car and building a replica........sounds like a decent plan IMO. Only hinderance I see is getting it THAT low will require some serious re-engineering of the suspension as lowering/chopped springs just wont cut it at such minimal altitude - the ride would be shocking. I believe the real BTCC cars had all suspension mounts raised up on the shell, giving the low-ness but retaining some suspension travel.

A guy round the corner built a BTCC cavalier replica, its the absolute nuts! Its all stickered up, caged, the lot. Id say go the whole hog and build a proper replica.... Start with the right colour first though, the cavalier guy had to respray his cav to get it right. The base car cost ÂŁ38 from ebay IIRC. One guy, one garage........ lots of elbow grease but well worth the effort. This is the real thing, the replica is a spot on recreation.

Oh, I know it'll be a lot of work. It's a case of "It's done when it's done". Suspension challenges are all part of it for me, I want it to be unique. Well, unique in terms of a road going Mondy anyway. Oh, and Bodie, they started on a K sadly, don't think I ain't thunk it! Chris

I like the idea of that, 90s BTCC style FTW! Or how about converting a Focus to RWD with a V8? I'm sure I've seen a rear drive conversion kit somewhere. Or, Would a 2.0 Zetec fit into a Ka.......?

early mondeo saloons that are low and have a suited set of rims can look great. there used to be one round my way a while back and i thought it looked ace. rwd + V8 idea is a good one too.

I was thinking similar but with a primera! Go for it! Rysz. A lad in the village where i work has a BTTC replica Primera, i keep trying to get pics. Sounds an awesome project, i've always prefered the Mundaneo saloon. i quite fancy buildin an 850 Estate BTTC replica.

do a transit van, midmount a mondeo V6 in it, lots of room for stuff you can nick off sponsors, not over expensive or to complicated but still pretty radical i reckon.

i've long wanted a Eurocar / nascar mondeo looker. I reckon it would be bad-ass but painted in that dark green with extra suffs and cracked bumpers as for getting the suspension nice and low - employ Street as consultant!

I think Hotwire's on the money here. I'm not a fan of race replicas but a 'sorted' Mondeo estate could be very excellent. Ford did a pretty good job themselves with the later V6 ones, but I'm sure an early one (is it just me or have they all already disappeared?!) would be most tasty.
