Another old remedy is rub the nib of a pencil along the edges of the key the graphite or whatever it is these days lubricates the tumblers allegedly

Either of those two might well do the trick. Other than lubricating the barrel of the ignition lock to hell, or removing the wires from the lock and attatching them to a switch to allow you to start the car (extreme I know, but at least it'll get you moving, although if the car has any security systems like immobilisers they may well kick up merry f*ck at that.) until you can get the lock moving again or get a new one from a locksmith if it really won't budge, I'm not sure what else would work. With any luck lubricating it should work, try squirting WD40 or similar into the barrel of the lock using the little straw thing you get with the tins of it, and maybe soaking the key in it too, and see if that eases it up.

Give it a good kicking! Failing that a good wrestle on the steering wheel with the key in and lashings of wood-40 oughta shift it.

You tried the spare key (if you have one). If your key looks worn see about getting a new key made. If the barrels worn you might be better of getting a second hand barrel (or lock set) from a scrapyard and fitting that. It will save a bit of heartache later on.

cheers for the help lads, after my rage calmed down abit i went back out, wd-40'd the mutha fooka and retraced my steps back through.
when i got the car the ignition barrel moves slightly on the colum, so in my search for [recision i ripped off the cowling and proceeded to tighten the bolts holding it on. brilliant i thought, job done!
so i basically undid the bolts and returned the bolts to there "loose" status and bobs ure uncle!
i did try all the afore mentioned methods thought, hitting it with mole grips, spanners,my hands, adjustable wrench! now i can go to bed with my safely alarmd and steering locked car outside, ahhhhhh!
cheers again! robin

The key on my Golf is the original one, and it's worn smooth over the years. So from time to time I have to spend up to ten minutes jiggling it around in the ignition barrel, trying to get teh steering lock off... It's very frustrating! There's a spare, but that's a copy of the main one and therefore new, but equally smooth...
Must get round to getting a new one cut from the number!

i got a new key cut today as its virtually wafer thin in the middle as it has to run over a ball bearing to get into the barrel and its worn the middle out!
the new key is still a bit burred up and stiff but I'm going to smooth it a little tomorrow with wet and dry as its stiff in the doors and the tailgate

metro's should have a box attached to the end of the ignition barrel, take this off, and anything will work in it to get it started, you just have to get round the steering lock (snapping it does the job ;D )
ps, i know this cos i worked at a scrapyard, not cos i was an unscrupulous curse word ;D
