Right, I have a plan for refitting the pug's insides. Something along these lines..... I want it to look a little more finished though, so the question is 'How do I do it'? Can I just lay some mat flat (What on? I've heard glass?) and paint it with resin, let it dry and job done? How many layers? (Doesn't have to be mega strong, more about looks than anything else?) or can I use fleece material? Or any other type of material for that matter. For your troubles..... I know it's a pearoast but I would love to get this far one day!!! MMMMMM Carbon Fibre

If you want to create flat sheets of fibreglass, you'll need a big sheet of glass, some sort of release agent (a wax to stop it sticking to the glass) Gelcoat if you want it coloured and ready to use without painting, , Fibreglass mat and resin/hardener.
Wax the glass up, paint the gelcoat on, let that go off. Cover the surface in resin, lay your glass mat onto it and press it all in til its well on there (You can get little rollers for this).
Add more layers and resin to taste, depending on how thick/heavy you want it. The matting is what creates the strength, but only when properly impregnated with resin. Avoid air bubbles.
If you use no Gelcoat and Carbon Fibre weave, you can make carbon fibre too, but it probably won't look very nice without practice and maybe an autoclave to get the bubbles out.

That pic you've posted is a door with the inner skin cut out, no fibreglass involved. ;D I've had a bash at knocking up grp bits before and its a lot easier sat in front of the computer thinking about it than it is in real life. Try making small simple bits first to get the hang of using the stuff before you try something too ambitious.

I've had a bash at knocking up grp bits before and its a lot easier sat in front of the computer thinking about it than it is in real life. Try making small simple bits first to get the hang of using the stuff before you try something too ambitious. This is really something I should have mentioned too. It sounds dead easy, but when you have sticky fibreglass mat all over your arms and everything is sticking to everything you begin to realise it's not as easy as it looks. And then the dog comes in and tramples over it and then runs round going made and drags it all through the garage into the hallway and the new cream carpet. It's not a technically hard process, I imagine a bit of practice will make perfect. I tried it and got a few small sheets and bits made (I cast some simple bits and bobs, made some footwell kick pods and stuff) but they were far from perfect, and I was peeling half sticky resin off my hands for about 3 weeks.

I used to work in a boat yard, fiberglass is nasty smelly messy stuff that you really need to practise with to get the knack for making stuff with, just use a sheet of ally instead, its much easier, thats why everyone else does it i CAN make stuff with fiberglass but i still don't bother.

Ok. Thanks for the info. Can you use fleece material then and fibreglass resin, I seem to remember seeing this used for speaker pods and the like?
Oops, thanks Rev, you're right....... cut out door. Doh!

I'm assuming by fleece you mean tissue? You can use that with normal fibreglass resin and you can get from anywhere that stocks GRP materials. I get all my stuff from this place just around the corner from my workshop. www.cybglassfibre.co.uk/

Rev. No, not tissue, actual fleece material, like fleece clothing (tops)/blankets?
Grunty. New I'd seen the idea somewhere else on here, thanks for the info. How is the bus?

as stated before, glassing is a horrid sticky nasty opperation, and the SMELL, that lingers for weeks, together with glass splinters that will come out of your skin in months, not my fav job, carbon can be done at home, use epoxy resin its not as smelly, and more infared stable, I used to get my stuff from a place in Brentford High st, but one of the cheapest places for Carbon mat, is E Bay, not Ebay .co.uk, but Ebay.com the US pages,

When you say fleece are you talking about flocking? thats normally sprayed on to an adhesive and electrified by magic so it all stands upright and feels furry.

No, not flocking, already tried that on the dash! That's not easy either! I've got some material here so I'm gonna give that atry today. I guess it is abit like tissue but thicker. I'll take some pics and let you know how I get on Thanks for all the info.

If you're going to cover it with fleece or other material why not use hardboard? v cheap from the DIY chains and easy to cut to shape.
