Thought i'd post up a few pics of my latest project/daily driver. Its a '96 LDV Pilot 6 seat crewbus. 104k miles, a few battle scars here and there, surprisingly comfortable for what it is, not the quickest, but does what i need it to do. Bought as a daily driver and for use as transport to and from rallies, plans are to fit a kitchen in the rear, and i will fit some alloys if i can find some.

Awesome.
I love the total rubbishness of these vans, compared to the equivalent J van or even a Transhit they are hopeless! But they are supremely, disgustingly cheap compared to everywhere else, plus loads seem to be like this, a useful combo of seats & space. I'm contemplating a '400' LDV just as a useful thing to have.

I like the Pilots too, Always wondered how one would be with a 1.9 TD conversion, some decent suspension and the tractor like steering vagueness sorted out.
My mate has one for work, never breaks down (if you don't count all the things that have fallen off)
My sisters got one too, as a DD and camper, rusty as hell but reliable.

Are they the same stud pattern as Sherpas?
5x127 (5") I think...Rover RWD, P100, Jeep Cherokee, Jensen Interceptor, Vauxhall Viscount?

Nice workhorse. Has just a smidgen more class than the old british leyland post van Freight Rovers. Although if memory serves you could get them with rover V8 fitted?

These are very underated. I believe these were fitted with the Pug diesel lump, should be tweakable in Turbo form. The last of the LDVs were fitted with the modern Transit diesel engines. I hired one of the last of the 400 series Lutons to get me to Majorca and back with a house lod of furniture. It was the most uncomfortable van I have ever driven but after 1800 miles in just under a week I can honestly say i fell in love with it. the Transit lump helped a loaded to the rafters totally unaerodynamic van sit at 90mph for hours on end. By the time we got it back to blighty the brakes were shot as was my back but i was truly sorry to see it go. Thats when I truly understood why people fall in love with the most unlikely and, to many, hated cars. They become more than just a lump of metal.

Although if memory serves you could get them with rover V8 fitted? the rover v8 was in the first 300's but had a large bulge in the bulkhead,,,,which would be the modification needed to the 200 probably the handling would be abit suspect with 220 lb/ft replacing the standard 88lb/ft

v8 has to be done! there a guy local to where I'm from with a white one fitted with a v8 and it cracks me up, when you see people in the street looking for a tvr or similar to drive past, only to see a battered old ldv van!

I like!
don't see many rotten late ones about, the scrapyards always seem to have atleast 1 random R reg LDV pilot in stock and none seen rusty. ALWAYS ex post office though!
Wasnt it just the LDV 400 series that had the V8 fitted? Ive never heard of a 300. IIRC they were usually police riot vans too.

Don't the pilots have an exhaust which sounds like a chavvy fartcan when you hit 2nd gear at about 1,700rpm?

With a Lucas pump you could, yes, as they use the XUD9 lump. NO! The Lucas/CAV pump is the one that dies horribly on veg oil, sometimes in as little as 2 miles. The Bosch pump copes very nicely. The XUD9 (turbo or not) is fitted with one or the other, depending on what was available/cheapest etc. James

My saff has Lucas pump and i only run small amounts of veg purely to save it going in the bin when we empty the fryer (i do filter it first) In reply to another post they did do a 300 series, It was between the 200 and 400 (obviously lol) IIRC it was mostly minibuses and sandwell council vans tho, We had one, it was a 310. 2.0 Petrol engine from a Marina (i think) Single wheel rear hubs with what looked like landy steelies on with normal tyres. Door locks that never ever ever worked and the wheels used to fall off! pmsl

The Police crewbuses had a V8 fitted in them. Great fun pulling out from the Police yard. You could really wind them up as well even fully loaded. Only problem was the back brakes would lock up when it was cold.

Ambulances had the V8 as well, with twin alts and batterys but ithink the 200 is too narrow for the V8 to just drop in, the older sherpas had a converted to diesel marina 1800 B series that was slower than a snail having a kip my old B reg sherpa minibus had an LSD though and was great in the snow (not enough power to drift in the wet). The 2.5 TD 400s go well enough except when they are in ambulance spec, cos they weight 3 ton empty I recon a turbo diesel in there in place of the NA unit would be cool
