	Ok i have a 306 HDi as my daily driver and it has been totaly reliable up untill the last 2 weeks.Firstly the fan belt came off on the motorway in the fastlane and left me with no power steering or charging of the battery.So i limped home.I fitted a new belt from peugeot dealer but now when its cold the belt squeals when you turn the wheel or switch anything electrical,it goes away after a few minutes.Its tightened up to the max but still does it just the same.Anyone have experiance of this?Also last night the gearbox was whineing in 3rd but now its stopped.I realy love this car but since i left my misses i don't need a diesel for comuting to work as i live in the same town as it.The other thing is i just took a nice Citroen Saxo VTR out for a test drive,i realy like these as i think they are Future retro.What do i do? Fix up the pug or trade in for somthing else.

	Sell it, pocket the cash and use either the Mini or Metro for commuting? I wouldn't have a Saxo as a gift.....

	Yeah the mini is in bits and when i say bits its been reduced to every nut bolt and bracket.The metro's gearbox was trashed by said ex GF.But i did pick up another gearbox for it yesterday so thats one option to consider.Are saxo's really that bad?The only thing i did'nt like was that it took an age to stop,and it had discs all round

	Apart from the image problem, yes they are that bad. I wouldn't want to be in a smash with one either. Think about it, how much would you get for the pignut? They still fetch decent wedge, especially the ultra cheap to insure HDI. How much retro would that buy you?

	I wouldn't have a Saxo nether, Nasty cars, My sister had a y reg VTR that had only done 30k, It was a right heap and only 3 years old at the time, It had lots of problems with the gearbox and power steering and other bits and pieces though the lowered suspension didn't help. She had a hell of a job selling it and lost a fortune.

	sometimes slipping belts 'polish up' and lose a lot of their friction-ness.

	I tried belt dressing spray on another car once that had similar problems but the belt quickly turned to mush.

	its squealing because it's slipping. how long was the belt sitting in the pug garage and how worn are the pulleys? mileage insane yet or not?

	It depends what you want from a car. Saxo's, from my experience, are pretty unexciting. Bad image (as said), awful interiors, not as quick as they're implyed as being and a bad image (has that already been mentioned??) I'd fix the metro and rock that. Or flog the HDi for a wedge and go shopping to make yourself feel better D

	Keep the 306, they're brilliant (not too) moderns. Saxos are bloody awful and seem to be forged from the finest cheese available in France for under 2 Euros.

	dons baseball cap Saxo's are brilliant little cars. I've had two vtr's znd loved both, infact my 2nd one is prolly the car i miss the most out of all my previous rides. However they do suffer from the chav stigma and have common faults. Gearboxes tend to die, this can happen anywhere between 45 and 100k. Powersteering pumps tend to die and can be pricey, best bet is scrappies. Droplinks and driveshafts die if they're extremely low. Watch out for rot where the boot floor meets the rear inner wing and around the front inner wings. Although they do suffer from a few probs its no worse than a similarly aged Polo its just the polo's trim is better quality. Parts are cheap and readily available, but the absolute best thing about them is there an absolute hoot to drive, seriously grin inducing. I'm geet proud i've just done this whole post on the wii

	Hey, if you're single, and live close to work, surely it's the ideal time to take advantage of being able to buy a large, powerful, ugly, non-GF-friendly beast of a vehicle without having to put up with any whining. Personally I don't mind Saxos but in your position I'd be rolling in a matt black XJ40 with no silencers, or a slammed Volvo 850 T5. Do it while you can!

	which is the quick one, the VTR or the VTS? Get the quick one. They are proper lively and will embarrass some proper quick stuff. Lowering a VT-whatever Saxo knackers the handling. The geometry is right as it is. Good tyres will do more for handling than any suspension mods. As for your current xcar, the squealing could be a bearing in the water pump/alternator/whatever which could be why it threw the last belt in the first place. I'm all for commuting in stupid impractical huge cars FTW

	Try some chalk on the belt to stop it slipping. A slipping fan belt isn't really a reason to sell a car. You'll struggle to get any money for it with the 2nd hand car market as it is and with xmas coming. I'll agree tho that if you want something impractical then now's the time if you've a short commute, exactly what i've done.

	I don't think the slipping belt is a problem to him now, the gearbox has gone Pete Tong and he's selling it.

	Yep the gearbox made the choice for me :(I do like this car,and i am looking for a gearbox for it but in the meantime its in the for sale section.But TBH i'm not going to keep bumping it up the lists if no one wants it.

	Does anyone know if earlier diesel turbo boxes fit the later HDi cars.Theres loads in the breakers for pennies and proper HDi boxes are unobtainium.
