Forgive me if this is a taboo/off topic subject of some kind, but lady horns and myself are looking into getting a camper for jaunt round europe next summer - we did 6 weeks in a car and tent last time, which rocked, but you do get bored of pitching/packing away the tent all the time. Inclination and finances dictate that we'll be getting something a bit old and tatty. Scene tax rules out VW, plus we'd like something a little bigger - but not a huge box on wheels. Front runner at the moment seems to be one of these cgi.ebay.co.uk/TALBOT-EXPRESS-MOTORHOME-TAXED-MOTED-BARGAIN_W0QQitemZ120338723836QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Campers_Caravans_Motorhomes?hash=item120338723836&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A7|39%3A1|240%3A1318Ebay seems to have a ready supply of them for as cheap as a couple grand, and we're willing to freshen up a tired interior and do a few repairs to make it roadtrip-worthy. Anyone owned one? Anyone know a good reason not to? Any other suggestions? Oh, and as a special treat, here's the wildcard option - unbolt my boot lid and fit one of these...

We own a Talbot camper simular to the one on the ebay ad. Ours has a 2litre engine (peugeot) I think. Drives quite well bit slugish on the hills but cruises quite nicely at 70 down the motorway not too bad on fuel either.
It seems that they like to rot on the bottom of the doors and the sills ours has been repaired in the past as it has new doors etc on it.
The interior is very nice but quite cramped with 4 people in it, it has a bunk bed in the roof mostly only suitable for storage or children and a big double bed that uses the sofas and drivers and passengers seats all folded down.
Hope that helps a bit
Just read that ebay add lol i've pretty much said what they have! ours is set out slightly different to that fridge etc is in defferent places but other than that it's exactly the same.

Bedford CF. Range of sizes available from the converted-from-a-panel-van size: to the luton-van-style-palace ones: A friend of mine had one of the larger ones, but it was a LWB with a massive overhang, it really was gigantic inside. New SPAM FROM fitted, had a 2.5 diesel engine with recent rebuild, new leisure batteries.... couldn't sell it, no interest as it wasn't a VW basically! Ended up giving it away to some travellers

This is on Ebay (25 quid at the moment) and only a few miles from me. Huge inside, just begging for a camping interior. It's a metre longer than normal H-vans.

Another vote for the CF from me. They are noisy and not very refined, I wouldn't be without mine though! Cheap as chips and no scene tax is a big plus and you can be more unique than just another VW.

Be careful with buying a converted van/ambulance/hearse etc. With the exception of VW's, insurance companies will charge a fortune for a converted van - high risk due to fitting flammable stuff, apparently. Have you had a look at some yank stuff? They are a little more money than you are currently looking at, and of course most have big petrol v8's, but find a diesel one or one that's been converted to LPG and you will have a bomb-proof house on wheels. Granted, we bought ours in Canada and brought it home, but it gave us 10,000 trouble free miles around north America, and continues to do sterling service back here in Blighty. We'd not used it for four months, turned the key and drove an 800 mile round trip to Edinburgh without it missing a beat. The bed is comfier than at home, and although it does 13mpg, that is on LPG, so around 25mpg as a petrol equivalent.

Well.....
My logbook says my van is a motorcaravan, so that's what it's insured as. Costs me £110 a year.
There might be an argument in the event of a claim but if the DVLA have it registered as a motorcaravan then surely that's what it is?

my uncle drives around europe with a maggiolina on his Peugeot 504 station (with LPG conversion off course) No hassling with a caravan or an awful handling van and still have a comfy place to sleep
