Evening all, Was round Dave's workshop today (davemk1gti) doing what we do best (drink lots of coffee and try to make broke things a little less broke) and Dave's diesel astra estate was being gutted by some guy, forget his name. Anyhow once the astra was gutted we were left with a bare shell for scrap when dave came up with the idea of making a astra pick-up truck (don't think its ever been done before) anyways while i got down and dirty with a volvo's dash, dave got down and dirty with an angle grinder and an astra estate. And here is the result: Now i know its not quite retro yet but do you guys think this could be a cool project or just scrap it and move on with other projects?? We were thinking something along the lines of converting it to rwd and putting some massive v8 in the front and making a holden sort of thing, basically go crazy and see what the results are. What you all think? Dan

Its amazing how much fun an utterly useless piece of left over diesel estate can be.
I reckon it would be interesting to do the bodywork on it at least, trouble most of the front of the car is now missing. so I'd have to but another astra to fill it up again,
But I am feeling the holdon pickup V8 thing and thought a miniture astra version would look 'cool'
peoples thoughts are welcome including some insperation.
what with the long winter nights a bit of angle grinding and welding keep me warm.

Do it!!
Could you leave the front off, exposing a nicely finished V8 like you mentioned and a bullbar with a couple of spotlights on? e.g one of those Beetle Based Sand Rail buggy things?

My old carlton pick up... DO IT! ;D

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

The dolly is a long term project, that started from a green 1850 shell and a rusty doner 1850 and morphed into a french blue V8, thats now turned into a 1.8 M10 powered dolly, It wont be mega fast but will look nice (orange cars just do) and be a daily driver for me. When I get round to it I will do a readers ride section. as for the pick up Idea, Its normal for me to have the odd moment, and sometimes the best creations come from nowhere. I do agree that ther eare more worthwile projects out there but I do like the 'odd ones' ones that make people say 'why'. And scrap value is NIL as the mo and MIG wire and time are free and I can use it to let other people have a go at welding on it when they come down - let them work on something real not a couple of pieces of cut up metal on a bench. have some pickup pics

Bin it, a mk3 van would be an easier base, no rear doors to be messing about with.

You still got the bootlid knocking about? Cause you could just weld that behind the seats to complete your cab, with fitted glass!
