My 318I is slowly destroying its cooling system and it looks like its the turn of the water pump to start failing- whilst I am mechanically proficiant enough and fairly well tooled up to to the job I need to know if theres any special tools I need to do it as I having a sneaking suspcion theres a viscous coupling hiding in there somewhere and cos the fiat earnt its self a trip home on a low loader last night once its apart I'm stuck. so if any one can provide an idea of what to expect (or point me to a web guide on changing it) then I would appreciate it. heres a shiny bmw race car in thanks-

for most bmw's all you need is a 36mm spanner, slip it onto the coupling and curse word it with your fav hitting stick - remember its reverse thread you may need a couple of longish 6mm bolts to screw into the old pump, wind em in evenly to pull the pump out, as said, this covers most i have done but i don't recall doing a 318 so it could be all plums regards that engine dig in matey

what year is it on mate. my sisters was a piece of pssi. the water pump has a plastic impeller in side the block which breaks off causing it to act like a head gasket prob. i don't recall the viscous being in the way .the belt is on a tensioner and the water pump pulley is plastic which some times breaks up. any probs give me a shout mate.

36mm spanner and some "clank" to get viscous off, You can get water pumps with metal impellor, plastic water pump pulleys are rocking hor......even from BMW! and swap to electric fan..

It is a 32mm! And it is a left hand thread!
And if your car has a plastic thermostat housing try not to smash it up with the spanner when undoing the fan as they are hard to obtain on a Sunday when your sisters bloke need the car for his work on monday morning! (Voice of experience!)

also if you wedge a screwdriver into the M6 bolts that holds the plastic water pump pulley to lever the viscous nut off, its a safe bet that they'll bend and crack the pulley. long chisel works well though
