At 258,000 km/160,000miles & 29 years my Honda's leaking valve stem seals are now starting to get embarrassingly smokey... So I wanted to get opinions whether everyone would normally just replace their seals or go the full works & have the head off to have everything done such as valve guides / valve seats / resurfacing etc. Just spent $600 + getting my Lancia's head redone given it's twincam & uses valve shims... & yet to re-fit. But Accord's in daily use, discouraging me from removing the head.

Its worth lapping the valves in a high mile motor like that I would say, measure the guides and stems while you have them out then you'll know if they need doing too, chances are they'll be ok if the motor has been well serviced.
You should get it all done in a day if everything goes to plan.

As its a quick job try fitting the seals and see if the smoking clears up. My guess is if its 'that' bad its probably the guides anyway and its a had off job.
that said you will probably be able to tell if they are worn when you take the springs off and then dicide what to do.

Being lazy I'm thinking I will give valve-seals a try first.... At least the Honda's had hardened valve seats from the start for its alloy head & Unleaded fuel already in use in the Japanese & US CVCC engines. Sent my other Accords head off for work at a similar mileage many years ago & I think the place only mentioned replacing seals & surfacing. Just have to source a valve spring compressor; Local tool place wants $140 for the sort with hooks to grab spring & compress it insitu ...... Though one in similar packaging could be bought Via Ebay for $30 -including postage! so I will be looking at pricing at a Swap-meet on Saturday. Unsure how well this sort of spring compressor might work with Honda's double valve springs though - otherwise I might be welding up some metal into a lever to compress them.

If you have a welder you can adapt a clamp like this, I used it to do an 8v head recently.

i think he wants one to do it in situe.
In which case you need to pressurise the cylinder with compressed air through the plug hole and use a bit of flat bar with 2 holes in. You put a long bolt through one hole and screw it into a rocker cover stud hole. Then the other hole is bigger and sits on the retainer so you can lever down on it and take the collets out.

Actually I have just gone & made my own from a couple of pieces of angle iron (with the hole for the valve-end & collets) to lever against a "bridge" piece bolted through the rocker-pivot/Camshaft mtg. mountings. & found a screwdriver will easilly fit through the plug holes to hold up the valves... will take picture once I'm done..
After big swap-meet on Saturday where I should buy a torque wrench so & don't have to get to parents place to borrow dads!

don't use a screwdriver, far to tisky to the valves... compressed air, as slater says, or a good bodge is to feed about a foot of thin rope into the cylinder (keep one end out tho!) and bring the piston up to compress it into the chamber, holding the valve shut.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Regarding screwdriver I certainly wasn't thinking of forcing the valves against it; but wrapping it in cloth tape to "soften" it & protect plug threads & valves & leaving it a loose fit so only hand pressure would hold valves upward.. But will look for compressed-air - plug-hole adaptor.
