Over the last few weeks, there's been talk of using satellite technology to track cars with a view to charging us for the mileage we do (I know this is old news, but my computer died and I haven't had a lot of chances to visit here!). Am I alone in thinking that this could be used to kick us in the teeth in other ways. If they can find out where we are at any one time they can also find out how quickly we're getting from place to place, and then send us a speeding summons through the post. Also, a few years back (don't know if it still applies), some EU countries prohibited vehicles over a certain age from traveling more than 25 miles from the owner's home address, or traveling at night. This now becomes easier to police with this technology, and the tax exemption thing makes us easier to single out. Another thing is , presuming they allow us to travel to cars shows, track days etc, what are the chances of us getting speeding tickets for drag racing, drifting etc.? Let's be honest, governments and technology don't mix. If you don't believe me look at the "Child Tax Credit" fiasco!

I've just spent the last 45 mins of this fine morning thinking how I could accurately measure the speed from a GPS signal... heres my thought process...
I only have the centre line of the road so corners represent a limit on acuracy, how can I solve this... when a car goes round the 'outside' of a bend, its travelling further, how do I compensate... can I add a 'wiggle' factor... doesn't help much, you'd just be taking the average bendiness of roads... ooo what if I connect something to measure the turning angle of the front wheels, I could then calculate the bend... that should work... what about the inacurancy of the satilite, how do I solve that... your trying to measure speed from space... need to bring it in closer to improve accuracy...
hold on, if the goverment want to prevent speeding... and there sticking a black box in the car... why don't they just stick in a speed limiter... job done... :wall: :wall: :wall:
This whole thing is just been massively over complicated answer where there are much simpler ways to do it... at the end of the day you want to tax car use for the benefit of society as a whole... stick the tax on fuel... end of _________________

It's just more govenrment muppetry, probably to distract you from a tax increase or something. It'll fall flat on it's as soon as they reallise how costly and impossible it is

sunbeam gaz, i disagree think about speed = distance / time they want to use the system to measure distance each measurement will have a time stamp basically equals three points please

dave.... yeah but imagine these two rather shoddy roads:
a o----------------------------------------------o b
a o/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/-o b
the second one is much longer, yet on paper you've still only travelled from A to B, the system will still only think you've travelled the same as the first route.
ALL gps devices though can calculate your speed on a much shorter basis, as in how many feet you've travelled in 10 seconds rather than how many miles in an hour. The new GPS based speed detectors have this as a feature as they're far more accurate than your dashboard speedo. so i guess they'll have the same system, which will internally log how many times you went over a set speed for a location, where you were when you did it, and it'll grass you up next time it wirelessly connects to a server.

exactly
ultimately, if they're using a GPS system to charge you for the exact number of miles you've done then they can use that very same system to do you for going too fast - very easily
given the same two roads a o----------------------------------------------o b
a o/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/-o b
will you be charged the same "road tax" for each road? no, you'd be charged more for the second road
