My 1969 Austin 1100 two door. It's been on my drive for the past 6 months with no MOT etc since I found a massive hole in the sill. When I found the hole I immediately began hating the car and wanted nothing more to do with it. 2 months later I bought the Alpine and the 1100 became nothing more than a rolling tool shed. I'm now at the point where I'd like to make some kind of decision regarding it's future. So, with that in mind should I: A)Get shot of it (dumping it in the river would be quite therapeutic!) B)Do something with it, and if yes what exactly should I do with it? So far the thing has fought me all the way where modding is concerned. When I bought it I thought it would look great lowered with a set of Minilites...little did I know that the wheels have an offset of +60 and Minilites don't come in such extreme measurements. I got the Minilites anyway, but they stick out a mile and look daft. As for lowering it....impossible with the Minilites as the tyres would hit the arches and of course if you let the pressure out of the hydrolastic system it destroys the handling. I've put on the bullet mirrors, fitted a GT grille and headlamp guards but it still looks really lame, kind of like a granny wagon with go faster stripes! Something needs to be done to make it look better, but I'm not sure what. And the trouble is, there are very few modded ADO16s about to get any ideas from and those that are modded have just got tuned engines (the only thing that is easy on this thing)and standard looking bodies etc. Unfortunately most owners of these cars hate seeing them modified, which I find quite daft as they are quite possibly one of the most boring cars on the planet when they're stock. I thought about fitting some arches, but they'd have to be bespoke and I have no skills in that area. I've also thought about de-bumpering it which is no easy task as it has stupid bumper rails instead of irons. Basically I think what I'm asking is, if it were yours what would you do to it! This was one of my ideas from about a year ago but never got round to it: All suggestions are welcome....even if it's 'push it off the nearest cliff and run like the wind'. Cheers!

Why do you hate it so?

Holy cr*p thats nice My suggestion, for what its worth, would be to bang it on the bay with a small reserve that you would be happy with. At least that way you feel a bit better as you are doing something about it if you don't want it anymore

Various reasons...It's just been so much trouble and I've never been able to make it look right....AND I sold my Citroen GSA to buy it, which was one of the best GSAs in the country! The hole in the sill was the last straw as I'd taken a week off work specifically to respray that side of the car and on day one I found the hole which just got bigger and bigger and bigger.... The hole in the floor really isn't an issue though...I can easily get it repaired, I just don't know what to do with it aftrwards!

I think it looks ace as is to be honest. Don't be angry that it rotted - steel always tries to get back to ore, it's only natural as Crowded House once sang (although I don't think it was rust they were singing about...)
Get it welded up and then either love it or flog it.

No words needed. do this and sod the ride quality ;D Unfortunately impossible as it wouldn't go that low and the wheel arches would be sitting on the tyres!

Another vote for weld:enjoy Surely something like this is pretty good fun being given some beans down a country road on a sunny (!) afternoon. If you still can't find the love, I'll give you a fiver for it.

wang it on the 'Bay, it should do quite well with a nice detailed write up & some quality pictures... Then go GSA hunting!

Surely some mini arch spats would go on to cover those wheels? space the rears out and that would be spot on imo

Even a minter is only worth £1500. In present condition I might get £250-£350. Surely some mini arch spats would go on to cover those wheels? space the rears out and that would be spot on imo Nah...mini wings are flat at the arches....the 1100 has flared arches. I would need to cut out the existing ones and make new ones (something I don't have the skills to do!).

weld, mot, sell, if theres no love there why keep it? you need to love an old car or it'll just get ignored and rot.

I sooo want to love it, I really do! If I could just find the right plan/right look for it I might love it again.
What about removing the bumpers? no-ones said anything about that yet?

Personally I think it looks fantastic as it is. If it were mine, I would get the necessary welding done and start on the mechanicals. Cams, carbs, heads and exhaust and turn it into a little screamer! Get the suspension updated and get it handling just right and I am sure this would be an absolute blast to drive.

Sounds like you are 'past it' wiith this one, I think you have moved on. I say sell it - you'll get a fair bit more than your £300 or so on the bay I think even with a hole in the sill, it really loks a cracker to me.
At the end of the day its a BMC 1100, one of the rustiest cars of all time - if a hole in the sill is doing your head in, this is not the car for you.
If you think they are the dullest car in the world styling wise, that says it all. Don't start doing daft mods to try and change it into something else - taking the bumpers off it will just make it look likt an 1100 with no bumpers on, i.e. rubbish. Lowering it as you say is not easy and will make it awful to drive. Get shut and concentrate on your alpine!
Any pics of the rusty bits?

I'd have to go with the sell it! Don't bother with ebay though, everyone wants something for nothing on there! If the love has gone though, get rid through one of the mini/specialist mags! I'd have it but SWMBO says one at a time!!!
