Just wondering if anyone knows if a rear firewall between the tank and passenger compartment is legally required on a road vehicle or just good practice? My internet search skills are weak and I've come up with nothing
The manta petrol tank is located behind the rear seat upright, between the inner wheel arches but as I've stripped the interior all there is between me and the tank now is a bit of 3mm hardboard - I'm thinking it might be a better idea to fit some steel/ally in there as well.....

Good question. And do you need one if you fit a swirlpot inside the boot area?

After seeing how my cortina went up this morning I reckon you should fit one even if its not a legal requirement, the flames were shooting into the interior from the boot in a sort of jet and my tank is under the floor!

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

We were picked up on it at Shelsley on the weekend. As standard the 205 has two plastic covers over the fuel tank, but apparantly that isnt good enough for motorsport and they must be fireproof.
So basically, no for the road, yes for motorsport.

And do you need one if you fit a swirlpot inside the boot area? Good point - I've got my fuel pumps/filters mounted in the boot as well I've gone for the better safe than sorry option and installed one. Remembered I'd got a sheet of ally I used for a door card on an old project which was just about the right size, so used that ;D

fuel filler is in the back of the van only problem i get is sometimes when i go to fill it up you have explain to the pump attendant that your filling the tank and not an illegal container i should get round to making the shield to cover it though really as the breather is in the cap so it can get a bit smelly in there at times

Not sure on the actual legality, might be something in the C&U regs? I did mine because it seemed like the sensible thing to do. Stuck this lot in the boot: ....so cut up a few sheets of aluminium: ...and a few rivets later: Fairly easy to do on my car, as it was just 2 flat panels riveted to the underlying steel pressings. I never thought about this until I first tried to fill up. Now it's everytime. Tannoy across forecourt asking me to hold up the container I'm trying to fill. I then have to go pay-desk and try and explain the boot mounted fuel cell. Getting a bit tedious now....so I carry an empty petrol can in the boot and hold that up. No one has ever asked me how I got £30 in one container
