Driven and owned many front and rear wheel drive cars and understand well the benefits of each but why do i find the thought of owning a front drive car scary? Is it my love of huge rolling rwd burnouts and drag racing, the fact i like to let it hang out or am i just a blithering idiot? Many say i am actually. Any thoughts or anyone else been in this pickle?

noooo, don't do it! fwd for shopping cars, you'll soon get bored and go back to rwd only.

FWD IS NOT EVIL There are plenty of fine, competent, and indeed fun handling fwd cars about, and plenty of wibblepoo rwd ones. Just cos it's rwd doesnt automatically make it any good

Well looking at going from 2 rear wheel drives to a mk1 festa with some breathing done as a cheap fuel cost daily and a hard slammed 4x4 as my toy (this may end up rwd though). Just something scares me about not owning a rwd

what sort of mk1 fiesta? My 950 mk2 handled awfully when pushed, but you've got to expect that really, when running 135's and bog stock!

I personally prefer RWD, because its the obvious choice of the heterosexual man, but to be honest, if you can't drive a FWD properly then you need more practice, understeer is the way of the McD's carpark crew, Oversteer is easy but requires a lot more skill to perfect and become good at than drifting something which has the driveshafts the right end.
A good time to reel out this old clip...

The first car i had was a mini, then the next one, then a maxi or two, a maestro, mk6 escort, all FWD. It wasnt until I got the granada that I had RWD, Id just got used to going sideways in that when it got nicked, then the lada continued the sideways enjoyment, then i got the pug 405.......... Anyway, now ive got chevette I cant wait to go sideways. I can cope with FWD and it can be a hoot too drive, but RWD just adds another dimention. Authough FWD is what I started in, id rather go sideways!

Ive owned fwd cars, just don't like the whole driving experiance not just at the limit handling, they feel nasty when accelerating or pulling out of junctions, there is NO fwd car that can stop you felling it through the steering wheel and i just don't like it, i wont whinge about the handling capabilities cos i know some fwds are better than some rwds, but a good rwd car is oodles better than a good fwd one.

In my opinion, a good handling car is a good handling car irrespective of driveline layout. My Mk2 Golf used to understeer like a b*tch. My Benz understeers like a b*tch. How and under what circumstances they understeer is down to the driver knowing the car. I don't see anything wrong with FWD. I prefer RWD because I like big lardy old barges and RWD suits them, but I think a smaller car works well as a FWD. I would have no qualms about driving front- rear- or four-wheel-drive as long as I liked the car.

Have we gone all pistonheads!!!!
FWD RWD AWD - doesn't matter advantages and dissadvantages for all
bottom line all have 4 wheels on the road and one in your hand and can be as fun as you make them ;D

I enjoy both, as long as the car is set up nicely they can both be hugely entertaining to drive but in different ways. Everyone should get to have some track time in a DC2 Integra, with someone that could really drive it before they make a judgement about FWD. But I also like....... .....too What do midmounted RWD cars handle like? * edited to fix picture

I've driven some good FWD cars, and been passenger is some very good ones with good drivers - and yes been impressed by the handling. But I know for a fact I'd have more fun in a curse word handling RWD car haha. If I just had to have 1 car only, it would be RWD 100%. But as long as I've got at least 1 rwd car in my life, I'd also like a DC2 etc etc at some point.

fwd = hitting the tree forwards rwd = hitting the tree backwards
Both have good points and bad. so long as it's a manual box then who cares!

I personally prefer RWD, because its the obvious choice of the heterosexual man.... Have to agree with this sentiment! Nothing wrong with FWD from a technical side, but there's something very feminine about having everything up the front. Can't quite put my finger on why this is, RWDs are just more masculine!

RWDs are just more masculine! What!??!! The Fastest and Best handling car I've ever been in was FWD, the BTCC Primera. Would make most 'masculine' men load their pants/break down and cry. It was terrifying. As BC said FWD/RWD/AWD who cares. Enjoy your cars.

Sorry...it was a sweeping generalisation! My Prelude was FWD and was not feminine at all! To me, everyday hatcback/saloon FWDs just seem less masculine.
