Right, here's today's daft daydream. In this months PC is a whole load of blather about these super-sexy looking sixties renners, though apparently they were slower than the class dunce stuck in treacle. But. These had various power units ranging from 845cc to 1108cc brrowed from other stuff in the range. Now, Renault 5's could also be had in 845cc and 1108cc flavas. Are these the same engine? And by default is the 1400 unit found in the R5 GTT a derivation / evolution of one of these designs? See where I am going with this... ;D So, if the above postulation is correct, it should -in theory- be fairly straightforward to make a horrendously fast, rear engined coupe / convertible with super sexy 50's/60's styling. Who wants to tell me it's feasable? Who wants to shoot me down? (don't all shout at once!)

Well, the 845cc lump in my Renner 5 was a direct descendent of the 845cc Dauphine engine. In fact, it was still three-bearing I think. That engine in turn goes back to the 747cc 4CV lump. Possibly.
Now, these ALL had the engine BEHIND the gearbox, whether mounted at the back or the front of the car. The Mk2 Renner 5 had a transverse engine, and I think different engines. Possibly.
All of the above may be rubbish so I'll just say get a Caravelle and have some fun!

On a similar note, Abarth were sticking the Fiat Twin Cam in 850s back in the 60s, Integrale motor is based on the Twin Cam... 1600OT 2000 OT every time I see this photo I always think, "Hey Luigi now thatta you move the radiatore to the front, wherea we gonna putta the spare wheel?"

The GT Turbo has the 1.4 Cleon engine, which was designed in the early sixties, I don't know how different it is, but the block was definatley used for about 30 years. The bigger 60's cars (1.4 and up) had a different engine again, the Renault 16 had this one.

Any Caravelle/Floride under 1108cc has the old Renault block that is also found in budget R4/R5/R6's, which is curse word. The 1108 is a Cleon engine, the same as in my DAF. More powerful Cleon versions are the 1400 out of a Volvo 340 (72bhp) the 5 Gt Turbo engine (115bhp), and the crossflow 1400 Alpine (Gordini in the UK) and Alpine turbo engine (95 and 105bhp). So yes, a Gtt engine will fit. Not sure the handling is up to it though. ;D

Engines in Mk1 R5s would slot straight in - you could drop a 1300 or 1400 Mk1 R5 engine straight in. However. I'm fairly sure I've seen a R5 GTT engined R8 so a Caravelle Turbo should be very possible.

440 turbo's are f-series engines, opposed to the c-series (cleon) caravelle engine, so no. Anyway, if you're making an f-series one fit, why not whack in a 2.0 16v clio williams engine?
