Excellent quality work. Certainly puts my efforts to shame! Any tips for butt welding? I have done it a little on my 130, but I must admit I often overlap my repair panels slightly. Sorry, forgot to reply to this with my earlier post With butt welding, I find it works best with minimal/no gap between the panels. Keep the heat down, and do tiny stitches at a time - leaving it to cool and not doing it too fast, until they all join up to form a continuous line Putting too much heat in warps the metal... good feeling ,when the primer flows .........the pictures make it seem so easy .....but in reality ,welding ,bodywork and painting it all yourself ........isn't for the faint hearted .....credit where its due dude .......your cars gonna rock Cheers fella - You're bit the bullet with painting yours, so I'd feel bad if I didn't have a go too Just a quick update... Didn't get it done yesterday due to the weather, but this was my work this afternoon - weather looked iffy all day, but it stopped raining this morning, so I was able to crack on

Wicked project mate. Love you idea of the ultimate street sleeper too! How many man hours do you think you have invested so far?
Keep up the good work

Phew. It's been far too long since I updated this. Apologies Hicksy for the slow reply fella, thanks for the comments . I don't like to think about how many hours it's been I've invested in this thing now, but it keeps me busy. We now have four wheels, brake lines (need to do the rear hard lines tomorrow) The 1500 gearbox had the axles removed, painted and then the original (early beetle) shorter axles fitted from the 1300 gearbox (Thanks MM for the help!). It appears to select all gears, and the suspension seems to work. Gotta fit a few other bits tomorrow, but nothing too scary. Then it's on to the prep and paint of the body Not to mention sorting the wheels, interior, windows and general reassembly... Front suspension fitted up: Rear axle and gearbox all sorted:

First off great car youve done a great job!
Secondly, This is very wierd. Today you have just replied to the question I posed waaaay back in sept 09. I have not been on RR since that day but logged in Today to search for a Mercedes 220s Fintail (there is a reason for this I may divulge later) but whilst I was logged in I thought I'd check readers rides which I love!
Anyway I the first thread I saw was yours, and being a VW guy naturally I opened it. I don't even remember adding anything to this thread so it was weird to see my name, then I realise It was last year I put it up, and then you reply today! It was clearly meant to be!
Best of luck with the rest of your project, and Hi-jack over!

Right, well, this thread is long overdue an update... it's only been 20 months since I last updated this thread. What with getting a degree and a job, I've been quite good at not doing much to the Beetle. Just before Christmas, a friend of mine kicked me into starting back on prepping the Beetle. So a huge thanks to Steve for all the help with the prep work and motivation on this. Anyway, I've just today got the front half of the 'shell in (etch) primer. Except for underneath the spare wheel well, which is still to do... No-one reads the words, so here are some pics... Lots of boring prep didn't really warrant any photos, so I didn't take many. There really is extremely little filler in it, I'm quite pleased with how it's come out As it stands... I sandblasted all the scuttle underneath (in front of the dash) and the windscreen lower corners - thanks to CCR Beaver for the sandblasting kit. Under the dash... On the to do list: Spray underneath the spare wheel well Prep and primer the roof and rear half of the shell. Seam seal all of the joints High build primer where needed... Topcoat! Hopefully it'll be less than 20 months before I next update this...

Strong work chap, it's looking great!
Slide side note but how is the Rover going? Was a few years ago now and I'm sure you don't remember but had a good chat about it with you at the Retro Rides gathering at Sparkford.
Anway, inspirational. Spurring me on to dig my Beetle out of hibernation. Keep up the good work.

Thanks fella, I vaguely remember that but it was quite a while ago I repainted the Rover about 18 months ago, in a single garage whilst also doing my masters year at university I think it would have looked like this when you saw it... and now... There are some panels which need repainting - this is the first car I've sprayed, and I didn't mix the paint correctly on one batch of 3 panels. It was at the Gathering last year, and should be this year too
