Up for sale on behalf of my Father due to an expanding classic car collection. 1984 Renault 5 Le Car 2 Turbo - basically a last-of-the-line Gordini Turbo without the electric windows, sound deadening and split-folding rear seats, meaning its a bit lighter and quicker! It's totally standard bar the alloy wheel nuts and CD player.
For those that don't know the spec it's a 3-door mk1 R5 with a 1400 engine, alloy OHV crossflow head, 2-choke Weber and a Garrett T2 Turbo putting out 110hp. It's got discs all round, big bumper with the cool yellow Cibie fog lamps, 13" alloy wheels, big, spongy, comfy bucket seats (yes there is such a thing) and not a lot else! It's quick enough to keep up with a mates E36 328 coupe.
Bought last December and used and improved regularly since. In March I had a small section of the N/S/R wheelarch cut-out and repaired. In April I stripped the front end and carried out the following:
Rust treat under bonnet - no rot found
Stripped engine, fitted new gaskets throughout
New oil, fuel and air hoses
Rebuilt carb
New water pump
New LuK clutch
New balljoints
New track rod ends
New wheel bearings
New brake hoses
Fitted Spax ajustables
New Mintex brake pads and Brembo discs
Stripped and painted the alloys
Fitted 4 new tyres
Full engine service and tune-up
At the same time I pulled the complete interior out and did the following:
Stripped seats and machine washed the covers
Made a new fabric headlining to replace the saggy, stained original
Recarpeted the parcel shelf
Fitted modern speakers in the original pods in the rear, and replaced the original stereo (still functional) with a Sony CD/radio
Fitted a new windscreen and window seals
Stripped and resealed sunroof - it doesn't leak now!
I expected to find rusty bits on the floor but there weren't any. I painted it to keep it that way!
The car drives spot on. It'll pull from under 1000rpm right up to the redline, it will not overheat no matter how heavy the traffic, it uses no oil or water and its probably the most fun car I've owned! It's averaged over 50mpg on a 200 mile trip up to Preston even on some very windy roads. All the elctrics work including the rear wash/wipe and those cool yellow fog lamps. The only reason I have to sell is that its not used enough to justify keeping it, and leaving it outside over winter even under a cover won't do it any favours. Comes with a few months MOT and tax. I've got no doubt it'll fly through its next test
Bad points:
Paint has worn thin
Drivers seat has 2" wear patch on the bolster
Drivers window winder is missing its knob
Car comes with some spares including lights, some trim, N/S wing and door, tailgate, bonnet, some glass, electrical bits, original Blaupunkt radio and the still unused spare wheel in a bag!
Looking for £2,400 ono. Pics will be added later
Allan can be contacted on 01269 592900 or 07800 741896. The car is in South Wales but delivery is possible on the car. Call for details!
