Right help my mate do the cam belt on his E30 its a D-reg 325i M20, when ordering the belt there are two different belts a 127 (modified tentioner) and a 128 (oe) toothed belt.
When we got the old belt off it had 127 teeth, so I ordered a 127 toothed belt and a new tentioner. The new tentioner and old one are pretty much identical.
We checked the timing and both the cam and crank shaft timing marks lined up. See pic.......
When we cam to fit the new belt it was very tight and was a right struggle to fit. We followed the Haynes manual and turned the engine over twice by hand anti-clockwise. The timing marks were now ever so slightly out with the crank mark matching the cam shaft mark was about 2 mm out.
Because the belt was a very tight fit we didn't want to damage it getting it off. So we ran it with the marks as they where. With the engine all back together it's doesn't feel quite right, feels like its holding back a little bit. Bearing in mind a full service was done at the same time (inc Dizzy cap, rotor arm, water pump, oil pump) PAS was also fitted as well (not present before hand)
Have we done anything wrong? Would using the 128 toothed belt be better?
