Well, it would seem my front plate has decided to jump ship. Now being an import car it was a little bit of an odd (and probably illegal) shape and font to match the original Japanese plates size. Now I can think of 3 ways to get another plate 1. Try to find a way to get an Enlish plate made up to Japanese plate size. Probably Illegal though. 2. Try to find an English plate holder and get a normal plate made. 3. Ditch the Japanese plate holder and get one of those adhesive vinyl plate things. Here's the plate that went walkies:

i don't think they're illegal if its an import car, however those new rules we read about the other week may have changed that. someone who knows more please correct me. if they are legal someone has to make them, for them to be on it in the first place.

Cheers guys. I will look into getting some made up in the right size then since it appears that those self adhesive ones are illegal regardless of size and I don't fancy tracking down a UK surround.

You'd better be quick, because the DVLA is about to change their rules on number plate suppliers:-
"While it is already an offence across the UK for motorists to display non-compliant number plates on their vehicles, as of 1st November 2008 it will become an offence to supply number plates that do not comply with the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001. Some number plate suppliers already advise their customers that non-compliant number plates cannot be used on the road and are for display purposes only, however, it will now be an offence to supply non-compliant number plates irrespective of any advice given."

Yeah, but somewhere in the mists of the legislation, there was an exception for imported J-tin I think. Might still be there?

There better be. Otherwise its illegal to drive without a front plate and its illegal to buy a new one that fits.
That sounds about right in this day and age.

Hi! <-- 1st posting, introduction follows on adequate position, just another freak from D. To topic: Rules for plates are very strict in D but licensing an import car isn't quite an issue as 2 rows of letters and numbers are allowed in case of required special plate shapes e.g. US ones. Even the font may be smaller than usual if the original specification of the vehicle requires this. In case of buying an US Audi for example, the plate space in the trunk door or tailgate is clearly defined and cannot be altered easily, what do you do in GB? Being forced to cut out a piece of metal or change the entire tailgate? I have a set of SCO Plates here, they're HUGE and would barely fit into the original Euro plate space, not looking ugly, though.

This only applies to suppliers based within the UK. You could of course buy your plates from elsewhwere where this legislation would not apply.
