The only 'distance from the bumper' rule I can think of is that it has to exit outside of the passenger cabin. *n I think you will find that is a necessity rather than an actual rule I recently saw a landrover presented for test (not mine I was just there, ok...) with one cherry bomb straight up through the bonnet with a tractor flap on the top of it. It passed, despite blowing out a cloud of black soot at eye level every time you rev it. A policeman might see it differently...

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Darn. Someone got in with flaps before I could! Just a thought that it might be a good idea given how much rain we get here! I'm not sure that drain holes in an exhaust are a good idea...

The main reason people take the stingers off of their Beetles for road use is that it's a direct replacement for the silencer and is basically a megaphone on the end of open headers. Mr Plod doesn't like that!

But being that my idea would be after the muffler, the noise wouldn't be so loud.
Liking the fact that theres not enough valid evidence to suggest its illegal.

At a guess the worst you would get is a caution and be asked to remove said offending items. Only way to find out is to do it, you know you want to!

IIRC I think it's in constructions and use that states the exhaust should protrude no further than the extremeties of the body of the vehicle and pedestrians shud not be exposed to any part of a vehicle ( hot or sharp ) that could cause injury. I believe it is for this reason the majority of truck vertical stacks, and cobra side pipes etc, have perforated heat shields.
However, there are a huge amount of cars that don't comply exactly with this and is prob more suseptible(spelling) to how strict your local constablary are !!!
