Fairly simple question:
Whats the legality of Bosozoku style exhausts here in the UK?
You know the kind, out the back of the car, and straight up.
Ones I'm thinking of would run to no higher than the bumper though.
This ones aimed a bit at rmad, since his Cressida seems to sport a set.

TBH I can't see the rozzers liking them much can you??? Hot steelwork projectin out the back of the motor just waiting to be brushed up against!!! Not too bad IMO if it doesn't stick out PAST the bumper...

That said, Ive seen quite a few Baja's with stinger-like exhausts, not to mention rods.

not sure how legal it is, but would look incredibly cool on the bluebird it seems most of the proper bosu cars huge exhausts just bolt on over the standard pipe, so you could fashion a removable one?

Very true... HHMMMM. Spose it depends on the copper you get tugged by i suppose eh... Not sure on the MOT side of it though... Not in work till next week either so can't check.

I've built a couple but not run one on the road yet. They don't get that hot though.

I had an idea for doing it so its easily removable if I get pulled, just unbolt, chuck it in the boot, Sorry Mr Officer sort of thing, plus to be removed for the MOT too, can't see them liking that. Netto are selling off some chavvy single to twin 'zorst tips, so I'm sure those could be added to. Is there some sort of hight restriction on the pipe end? Visibility stuff and whatnot. I have to get it past the gf first, she has it in her head that any modification is chavvish. Which is annoying. Quick Photoshop poke for general idea:

see, Ive asked this before..... and no-one has yet come up with a real "it isnt legal because of XYZ" answer yet.
I'm guessing theres something in contruction and use regs though.

I cant see a reason why they would be illegal, Many trucks have exhaust stacks behind the cab in a similar fashion and don't have any probs. Aslong as its not too loud should be ok I would have thought.

when people say "thats got to be illegal!" I say - show me the rule which says so.
What regulation does it break (except SVA which isn't an issue)?
tailpipes at the back don;t get at all hot really.
There's always the general catch-all a copper can book you for "dangerous parts" which is "in the opinion of the arresting officer" so could mean anything.

My pipes are removable.
If I was a copper I'd have issues with the fact that they send exhaust gases out at nearly face height, that they have quiet sharp ends that could literally poke you in the eye and that they obscure the rear lights.

Are they theoretically much different to the Stinger exhausts on Beetles? I know lots of people running those take them off for road use, but plenty leave 'em on too. Don't know

I can't personally see how it would be a problem, same reason Lanky Tim makes about truck stacks.
Problem is when you get a difficult MOT tester who will find a way of failing it even if there's technically nothing wrong with what you've done. I'd probably make them removeable for this reason and take it all off come MOT time. Ballache I know but it's the least grief in my experience.

I thought there was some rule about how far behind the bumper a tailpipe could project, but it's not in the MOT tester's manual (form a quick check) and the Construction and Use regs aren't available online.

A mate of mine runs a stinger on his bay,he's been pulled for it numerous times but there's curse word all they can do about it.Obviosuly he takes it off for MOT but from experience on road it hasn't been a problem.Personally I can't see the design you want on yours being an issue.Obviously there's a hell of a lot of difference between those and rmad's,which you would never get away with

I'm with jrevillug on this one. I thought there was some rule about how far behind the bumper a tailpipe could project, but it's not in the MOT tester's manual (form a quick check) and the Construction and Use regs aren't available online. Every time I've made an exhaust someone has always commented on how the tailpipe sticks out the back, but they've never come up with a reason why? What captainmatt has photoshopped I guess would be just legal, how many times do you see caterhams and cobras with side exit exhausts? The biggest issue is with pedestrians, not so much with the heat but sharp edges. I had a look at rmad's pipes at gaydon, and they would be marginal, mostly because of the edge at the top. There are rules in the sva over sharp edges, but as it will only ever see an mot it should be little or no problem. Maybe you could fit a set of rolled edge chrome tailpipe trims over the ends? Simon

you might get a vdr from the old bill for a sharp edge but its not an mot fail as you can only fail a sharp edge if its caused by damage or corrosion

The only 'distance from the bumper' rule I can think of is that it has to exit outside of the passenger cabin.
